What is an autocad technician and how to become one

Updated January 8, 2025
4 min read

An autocad technician is someone responsible for drafting blueprints, building plans, and technical schematics used in industries such as architecture, construction, aeronotics, manufacturing, and electronics. They usually use computer software, such as CAD, but they have to be knowledgeable about manual drafting techniques as well.

A range of industries employ an autocad technician for various purposes. For example, an autocad technician working in an architecural or civil engineering firm is tasked to draft outlines and plans for highways, buildings, and pipelines. On the other hand, an autocad technician in the aeronautical industry is responsible for designing and drafting blueprints for aircrafts and missiles.

There is no specific college degree required to be an autocad technician, but they are expected to have a certificate or associate's degree in engineering or architectural design and at least two years of hands-on experience in CAD. An autocad technician will also need skills such as communication skills, ability to work in a team, and strong attention to detail.
