1997

The company was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.

1998

Norma had revenues of EEK 482.7 million ($31.6 million) in 1998; nearly 90 percent of its production went to Russian and Eastern European car manufacturers.

1999

Autoliv moved some of its steering wheel operations to Tunisia in 1999 and also opened a $10 million plant in Turkey.

2000

Several acquisitions and joint ventures during the 2000’s

2000 - Steering wheel company Izumi in Japan, North American seatbelt operations of the Japanese NSK, and 40% of NSK’s Asian seatbelt business.

Night vision had been one project in development since 2000.

2001

Acquisition of OEA, a leading supplier of initiators for airbag inflators and Autoliv’s main external supplier of such squibs.​ 2001 - Joint venture Autoliv Mando Corporation, Korea.

An air bag cushion plant in Utah, where the company employed 5,000 people, was relocated to Mexico in 2001.

2002

2002 - Visteon Restraint Electronics is acquired and China’s first airbag plant is opened.

It formed a new joint venture in northern China in 2002.

Visteon Corporation, a spinoff of Ford Motor Company, sold Autoliv its Restraint Electronics air bag sensor business for $25 million in 2002.

2003

2003 - Steering wheel assets of the Japanese Nippon Steering Industries (NSI), and the remaining 17% of the shares in Livbag, Europe’s leading manufacturer of inflators and initiators for airbags.

The next year, the company bought out Japanese steering wheel manufacturer Nippon Steering Industries, which had been created as a joint venture between its own subsidiary Autoliv-Isumi and Japanese parts maker KIW. In 2003, Autoliv expanded its Malaysian plant to 14,500 square feet.

2004

Autoliv ASP announced an expansion of its Whitley County, Indiana facilities in July 2004.

2008

Autoliv's Utah operations received a boost when a group of ten automakers committed to install head-curtain air bags in half of their models by the model year 2008.

2018

In June 2018, the company spun off its Electronics business into a separate company Veoneer Inc.
