2005

Matt Mullenweg, founder of Automattic.com announced its establishment in 2005, primarily employing individuals who had contributed to his WordPress project, including Ryan Boren and Donncha O Caoimh.

Akismet, launched in 2005, is a service dedicated to spam filtering for trackbacks, comments and message contacts.

2006

On January 11, 2006, it was announced that Toni Schneider would be leaving Yahoo! to become CEO of Automattic.

In April 2006 Automattic's Regulation D filing showed it had raised approximately $1.1 million in funding, which Mullenweg addressed in his blog.

2007

On 18 October 2007, Automattic acquired Gravatar.

In 2007, the company received funding of $1.1 million from investors, including True Ventures, CNET, Polaris Ventures and Radar Partners.

2008

Two months later, on November 15, 2008, Automattic acquired PollDaddy.

In 2008, the company again raised a capital of $29.5 million, primarily with an aim to keep it independent.

2009

Owing to huge success of Automattic’s WordPress, the Power Magazine titled its founder, Mullenweg, as the ‘Blog Prince’ in 2009.

2010

On September 9, 2010, Automattic gave the WordPress trademark and control over bbPress and BuddyPress to the WordPress Foundation.

2013

In August, Automattic purchased Tumblr from Verizon for $3 million, a fraction of what it was worth when Yahoo bought it for $1.1 billion in 2013.

2014

On April 4, 2014, Automattic acquired Longreads.

In 2014, Automattic CEO and WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg committed to dedicating 5% of our company time to WordPress core, and invited other businesses and individuals to join us.

2015

On May 19, 2015, Automattic announced the acquisition of WooThemes, including their flagship product WooCommerce.

2016

On November 21, 2016, Automattic, via a subsidiary company (Knock Knock, WHOIS There) managed the launch and later development of the .blog gTLD, becoming domain registrars.

2017

In 2017, Automattic announced that it would close its San Francisco office, which had served as an optional co-working space for its employees alongside similar spaces near Portland, Maine and in Cape Town, South Africa.

2018

On June 21, 2018, Automattic acquired Atavist and its magazine.

2019

On August 16, 2019, Automattic acquired Zero BS CRM and rebranded it a year later to Jetpack CRM.

On September 19, 2019, Automattic announced a Series D funding round of $300 million from Salesforce, bringing the post-money valuation of the company to $3 billion.

In 2019, Automattic launched Happy Tools, a suite of products built with distributed workers in mind.

2021

On June 14, 2021, Automattic acquired journaling app Day One.
