DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position is responsible for the repairs and maintenance of City automobiles, trucks, and other motor driven equipment and their auxiliary attachments. The work includes diagnosing and correcting various mechanical problems in the automobile and heavy machinery fleet. While the ability to exercise independent judgement is required, general supervision is received from administrative personnel. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Illustrative only * Operates tools and equipment including but not limited to valve-grinders, drum-cutting lathes, wheel balancers, machine lathes, cutting and heating torches, basic machine tools, and mechanical and electrical measuring and analysis equipment; * Inspects, maintains, and repairs electrical, fuel hydraulic, cooling, and exhaust systems; Removes, rebuilds, and adjusts carburetors, distributors, transmissions, etc.; * Inspects, removes, and repairs brakes; * Repairs internal combustion engines, (gas, diesel) including fitting of crank shafts, pistons, pins, and bearings; * Repairs snow plows, road rollers, excavating equipment, street sweepers, and various miscellaneous mowers, pumps, generators, etc.; * Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels; * Road tests equipment. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: * Thorough working knowledge of mechanical tools, techniques, and procedures, including basic computer skills, as they relate to diagnostic instruments; * Thorough knowledge of safety procedures as they relate to automotive repair and maintenance; * Ability to analyze and diagnose mechanical problems; * Ability to understand instructions; * Ability to operate automobiles, light and heavy trucks, backhoes and other construction equipment such as wheel and stone, drills, air gun, air ratchet, sanders, hydraulic pumps and jacks etc.; * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; * Ability to communicate effectively; * Good judgment; dependability; resourcefulness; initiative; tact; courtesy; manual dexterity; * Physical condition commensurate with the demand of the position. Assembles, modifies, reworks, and/or reassembles components utilizing drawings, pick tickets, process documentation, and/or verbal instructions. Prepares and utilizes basic hand tools and machines including but not limited to power screwdriver, calipers, pressure gauges, oxy acetylene welding equipment, hydraulic test stand(s), solder iron, heat gun, vise, solder pot, hydraulic hose crimper, arbor press, band saws, and automatic wire strippers. Cleans parts prior to use, as required. Identifies wires with use of basic color code sequence. Identifies fitting types and plumbing sizes: NPT, SAE, JIC, Metrics Supports inventory handling and inventory transactions following established material procedures for purchasing, use, and customer invoicing. Participates in continuous improvement and team building activities; maintains productive working relationships with all team members. Possesses and maintains thorough knowledge of industry, machinery, and techniques. Possesses and maintains thorough knowledge of all applicable safety regulations and considerations, especially related to the safe use of hydraulics. Assists with identification of parts and bills of material as needed. Completes all required paperwork; prepares and maintains records of customer and supplier correspondence. Performs clean-up, and tool inventory activities. Performs other related duties as assigned by management. The Hangar Mechanic provides onsite maintenance support for Life Flight Network (LFN) aircraft including management of inventory, planning and scheduling aircraft maintenance, maintenance of the base library and LFN owned ground support equipment.
