Role Description This is a full-time, on-site role for a skilled Diesel Mechanic based out of our Sacramento, CA location. The Diesel Mechanic will inspect, repair, and maintain our fleet of Freightliner Cascadia's, Thermoking reefers, and utility dry vans. Responsibilities include performing preventive maintenance, diagnosing mechanical issues, repairing diesel engines, ensuring all safety protocols are followed, and maintaining accurate repair records. This role supports our fleet operations alongside our team of skilled professionals to ensure maximum vehicle performance and minimal downtime. Swing Shift: 2pm - 10:30pm Monday thru Friday w/Rotating Saturdays THE ROLE OF THE MECHANIC Responsible for mechanical maintenance services; maintains, inspects and repairs equipment to ensure safety and on-going operation. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, AND ARE NOT LIMITED TO: * Diagnoses, tests and repairs equipment including, but not limited to, powertrains and drivetrains, as well as electrical, steering, braking, exhaust and suspension systems. * Diagnoses, tests and repairs systems including, but not limited to, hydraulic, body control, electrical and body mechanical systems. * Diagnoses, tests, repairs and maintains processing equipment such as balers, conveyors, hoppers, electric motors and controls, as well as maintenance shop and company facilities. * Performs basic fabrication work using welding equipment, torches, tools and/or machinery. * Orders and maintains shop parts, tools, equipment and supplies. * Accurately and efficiently completes paperwork and/or computer database entries relating to the work performed. * Acts as a lead worker by regularly instructing and directing others by assigning, reviewing and checking work. QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is: * Four years of progressively responsible mechanical experience as a journeyman mechanic (or equivalent combination of education and experience). * Waste and recycling industry experience preferred. * Experience and knowledge of DOT Out-of-Service Criteria including CHP B.I.T. Diagnoses cause of most malfunctions and performs repair. Communicates with parts department to obtain needed parts. Saves and tags parts of the job if under warranty or if requested by the customer. Communicates with service advisor immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time. Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order. Road tests vehicles when required or refers to the test technician. Participates in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools, and events. Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical bulletins. Supervises work of any apprentice technicians as assigned. Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor. Ensures that customers' cars are kept clean. Notifies service advisor immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle. Keeps shop area neat and clean. Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals. Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as they were received. Key Responsibilities: Diagnose and Repair Mechanical Issues: Inspect and test vehicles to identify mechanical problems. Use diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot vehicle issues (engine, transmission, suspension, etc.). Perform repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, and other components. Electrical and Electronic Systems: Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic systems (battery, lighting, ignition systems, sensors, etc.). Work with computerized systems, onboard diagnostics, and specialized automotive software to perform tests and repairs. Routine Maintenance: Perform oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, brake inspections, and other routine maintenance tasks. Maintain a clean and organized work environment. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of services performed, parts used, and repairs completed. Provide estimates for repair costs and timelines. Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety standards, including proper handling of hazardous materials (oil, coolant, etc.). Follow manufacturer guidelines and industry standards for vehicle repair and maintenance. Ensure vehicles are roadworthy and comply with legal safety and emissions requirements. Skills and Qualifications: Technical Skills: Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing a wide range of vehicle systems. Tools and Equipment: Ability to use diagnostic machines, hand tools, and other repair equipment. Own Tools Requirement: Must possess a full set of automotive repair tools. This includes basic hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.), power tools, and diagnostic equipment. Attention to Detail: Precision in diagnosing and repairing vehicle problems accurately. Physical Dexterity: Ability to work with tools and components in tight spaces. Communication Skills: Ability to explain technical issues to customers in simple terms.
