Position Overview
The Automotive Mechanic (Commercial Fleet Specialist) will perform diagnostic, preventive, and corrective maintenance on a diverse fleet that includes Ford F59s, Freightliner MT45s, E450/E350 Cutaways, Chevy Express 3500HDs, Ford F650 Straight Trucks, and Ford Transit 350 High Roof Vans, plus medium and heavy-duty equipment.
This position operates on-site in our Willmar, MN shop, with potential for limited mobile service as our operation expands.
Key Responsibilities
● Perform full-scope diagnostic and troubleshooting across gasoline, diesel, and electrical systems.
● Execute scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) and ensure DOT compliance on all fleet vehicles.
● Conduct advanced electrical and system diagnostics using medium- and heavy-duty diagnostic tools.
● Complete repairs and rebuilds on engines, transmissions, brakes, and suspension systems.
● Document work performed, time, and parts in fleet maintenance systems with precision. ● Identify root causes, not just symptoms, with a focus on zero-rework performance.
● Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas in alignment with Big Inc safety and quality standards.
● Collaborate with leadership on repair planning, cost control, and uptime targets.
● Support future expansion by mentoring entry-level technicians as the shop grows.

Requirements & Qualifications
● 5+ years of hands-on experience in automotive or commercial fleet repair (gas and diesel).
● ASE Certifications (preferred).
● DOT Certification (required or must obtain).
● Diesel Certification (preferred)
● CDL (preferred).
● Auto body repair experience- highly valued.
● Proficient with standard and medium-duty diagnostic systems; heavy-duty knowledge a plus.

JOB SUMMARY
To provide safe, reliable and cost-efficient vehicles by performing quality preventive maintenance inspections and repairs as well as performing expert diagnosis and repair as required to prevent breakdowns on road, reduce vehicle downtime and improve total fleet reliability.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform required inspections and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment with in planned time tolerances to maximize the safety, reliability, and cost efficiency throughout the life cycle of the fleet.
Perform FAI/CVI (Annual) inspections on all fleet vehicles including tractors, trailers, converter dollies, light-duty vehicles, and any other company-owned equipment in accordance with all federal, state and local legal and regulatory agencies. (Includes all state-required inspections and frequencies).
Perform quality preventive maintenance inspections per company methods on all fleet vehicles including tractors, trailers, converter dollies, refrigeration units (Reefer), lift-gates, light-duty vehicles, and any other company-owned equipment.
Perform quality maintenance repairs as required to maximize safety and reliability on all fleet vehicles including tractors, trailers, converter dollies, lift-gates, light-duty vehicles, and any company-owned equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance, diagnosis and repair to refrigeration units (Reefer).
Address all Driver Vehicle Inspection Report write ups timely, and efficiently.
Diagnose cause of any malfunction and perform repairs to manufacturer specifications including but not limited to engines, transmissions and clutches, drive-line, differential, steering and suspension, fuel and ignition system, exhaust systems (including regeneration systems), intake systems, electrical systems, brake systems, HVAC systems and lift-gate hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems.
Follow procedures including documenting all work performed on work orders.
Mentor, teach and share expertise with Fleet Technician I and II to aid in their development to positions of greater responsibility.
May perform moderate supervisory roles when Fleet Manager or Fleet Supervisors are not accessible.
Proficient in electrical meter testing
Knowledge of controls and electric (DC (distribution center) low voltage
Electric motor knowledge (DC)
Complete electrical repairs and welding projects as needed.

2-year technical degree (such as Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Design, Machinist & Toolmaker, or related degree) OR must have fully completed a state-approved millwright apprenticeship (non-ACS). With a minimum of 2 years of full-time industrial millwright experience.

A High School degree or diploma although a GED certificate is acceptable and a minimum of 5 consecutive years of full-time industrial millwright experience.

Responsibilities
Diagnose, maintain, and repair vehicle systems including engine, transmission, steering, suspension, brakes, etc.
Utilize diagnostic tools, special service equipment and standard test drives to monitor vehicle components and systems
Perform work efficiently to dealership specifications
Maintain continuous communication with Service Advisors of needed services to ensure excellent customer communication
Qualifications
Valid Driver's License with clean motor vehicle record
Excellent time management skills and attention to detail while working under tight timelines
Willingness to follow direction while working independently
Ability to walk and stand for long periods
Ability to drive both automatic and standard transmission vehicles
ASE certification is ideal

What We're Looking For
Required Skills:
Basic mechanic knowledge and hands-on repair experience.
Your own set of tools.
Strong problem-solving and teamwork skills.
Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in tight spaces.
Preferred (but not required):
Technical certifications or degrees in mechanics.
2+ years of experience with diesel engines or truck repair.
Welding and fabrication skills.
CDL or prior trucking experience.
Familiarity with shop tools and Microsoft Office.
