We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Cook to join our team at Avamere Rehab of Newport. As a Cook, you will play a crucial role in providing nutritious and delicious meals for our residents. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about culinary arts and committed to ensuring the well-being of others through their cooking expertise.
Responsibilities
The Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking meals according to the dietary needs and preferences of residents in a skilled nursing facility. Key duties include menu planning, food preparation, ensuring food safety and sanitation standards, and coordinating with the dietary team to provide nutritious and appealing meals. The ideal candidate should have culinary experience, knowledge of special dietary requirements, and a commitment to delivering quality service to residents.
Serve meals that are palatable, appetizing in appearance and in accordance with established portion control procedures, on a timely basis.
Inspect diet trays; work with the facility's dietitian and process diet changes received from Nursing Services.
Coordinate food service with other departments.
Ensure that food and supplies for the next meal are readily available.
Ensure that menus are maintained and review menus prior to preparation of food.
Assist in serving meals as necessary and on a timely basis.
Qualifications
One year of experience in a hospital, nursing care facility, or other related medical facility strong preferred.
Must have a Food Handler's Card.
Must be able to cook a variety of foods in large quantities.
Must be knowledgeable of food preparation procedures.
Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
Create and uphold an atmosphere of warmth, patience, enthusiasm, and a calm and cheerful environment.

Education and Experience
This position must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be able to pass a criminal history background check, and have a current drivers license.

An example of this would be experience in volume food cookery in a large institutional kitchen or commercial food preparation establishment, with experience in the operation of a cash register and serving line.

Provides courteous, friendly food service to a variety of user groups including employees, visitors, physicians, and patients. Their primary focus will be on preparing hot and cold food items using a variety of prep and production cooking equipment, following scratch recipes and department specifications. They will follow the recipes as required but if serving on a retail cooking line or as a room service cook will often be asked to tailor individual items according to special customer and/or patient requests. They must comply with all hospital and department standards and must become fully knowledgeable about - and compliant with - all specific regulatory requirements in food service and in a health care environment.

Required Qualifications:
Upon hire: National Food Handler Card - State County City Authority
3 years - Working in a high volume, full service restaurant or institutional food service facility working in a production cooking capacity.
2 years - Experience working from scratch recipes and experience prepping and portioning items needed in the production process.
Experience working successfully in a team environment to accomplish common goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
Coursework/Training - 12 months formal culinary education/degree.
2 years - Experience assisting with recipe development and the creation of daily specials for all service/meal periods in a large food operation.
2 years - Experience using food production software (i.e. computrition), and ability to update recipes and production methods in the data base.
1 year - Experience as production "lead" or experience working in other leadership capacity in a full service restaurant or large institutional food service facility.
More years of diversified cooking experience which includes any combination of the following positions: line/grill/broiler cook, production cook, soup or sauté cook (12-18 month formal culinary education may be substituted for part of this requirement).
Experience in a USDA or HACCP production facility.

The cook position provides for and oversees the delivery of meal services to patients and hospital visitors. The cook is responsible for following all safe food handling regulations, practices and procedures. In the absence of the department manager, the cook may serve as a lead for the unit. The cook may help with on-line ordering of food inventory.
