The ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery is located about 40 miles southwest of Chicago in Channahon, Illinois. What role you will play in our team
We are seeking a Senior Chemical Process Engineer to join us at our manufacturing facility in Joliet, Illinois.
Our Senior Chemical Process Engineers play a pivotal role in the successful operation of our plants and are responsible for initiating and leading improvements to unit performance in safety, production, and reliability in a dynamic team environment. You will think strategically, execute thoughtfully, and collaborate across many teams, levels, and situations. In this role, you will serve as a senior process technical resource, providing technical and operational expertise to address complex processes across business teams.
What you will do
Serve as the technical leader on the business team by:
Mentoring less experienced engineers on design practices, unit health monitoring, and troubleshooting
Provide off-hours support of abnormal and non-routine operations, including unit Turnarounds
Aiding in the development of long term vision and strategy for product line improvements
Organizing and designing plant testing and product trials
Serve as a senior resource either serving as or working with supervisors on the team to set clear objectives, and ensure priorities are aligned for the technical team
Influence others and drive toward solutions without direct authority
Work in a team environment with other engineering disciplines, operations, and mechanical personnel and interface with corporate technology support
Ability to interface with 3rd party vendors (cost optimizations as well as developing/driving solutions)
Serve as process safety resource on business team leading Hazard and Operability Reviews (HAZOPs) and Risk Assessments by developing closure plans and strategies for identified risks
Lead/support incident investigations as technical lead
Provide support for developing and implementing various capital projects to drive margin or mitigate SHE risk
Provide assistance in the field during plant startups, shutdowns or upsets
Demonstrating courage of conviction to drive healthy tension for both business team and corporate technology support to promote fit for purpose outcome
About you
Skills and Qualifications
B.S. Chemical Engineering
10+ years of experience in Chemical Engineering plant with technical fuels/ chemicals manufacturing roles.
Preferred Qualifications/ Experience
Process design experience
Familiarity with advanced control strategies/optimization software
Working knowledge of RBI practices (corrosion damage mechanisms/mitigations, saltation, etc)
Risk assessment and HAZOP experience
Understanding of safety relief limits (modelling and evaluations)
Demonstrated understanding of modelling software (PROII, ASPEN, etc)

The expected annual salary range for this position is $140,000 - $160,000. Individual pay will be determined based on various factors, which may include skills, abilities, qualifications, work experience, and education.

With this new role, you'll have an opportunity to work on the following:
Process Development & Optimization
Support and improve CVI process parameters, cycle times, and product quality.
Collaborate with materials, R&D, and design teams to transition new products from development to manufacturing.

What You'll Bring to the Team:

The role involves tuning kernel subsystems such as the process scheduler, NUMA configuration, memory management, and interrupt handling. What You'll Bring to the Team:
5+ years of professional experience in Compute SRE, Linux system engineering, or compute infrastructure roles.
Strong proficiency in Linux kernel internals, with exposure to scheduler, memory allocation, and driver subsystems.
Experience with virtualization architectures and technologies such as KVM, Xen, QEMU, or VMware.
Familiarity with SmartNICs/DPUs (e.g., NVIDIA CX6/7, BlueField-3) and kernel bypass techniques.
Expert-level skills in at least one programming language: Go, C or Rust.
Experience with system-level debugging, including kdump, kexec, and kernel panic analysis.
Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code tooling and CI/CD practices for bare-metal or cloud infrastructure.
Strong understanding of compute scheduling, resource management, and high-throughput networking.

Overview
We are seeking a Process Engineer specializing in Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) to join Jafurah Gas Plant Engineering Division (JGPED) within Jafurah Gas Plant Department (JGPD).
JGPED is responsible for Processing Feed gas and producing Sales Gas, Condensate, and C2+NGL.
Your primary role is to manage and handle the operations of Sulfur Recovery Units (SRU).
Key Responsibilities
As the successful candidate you will be required to perform the following:
Handle process activities such as studies and design modification in the operating facilities and develop simulation models for assigned operation facilities.
Develop & review and/or validate plant mass balances and check plant performance to ensure it is running up to its design.
Use the software simulation programs such as HYSYS and flow assurance.
Formulate and implement long-term strategies to improve operations and reduce costs.
Lead groups of engineers in the shutdown and startup phase of existing plants and participate in standards reviews to assure inclusion of requirements that are of practical benefit to field operation and maintenance in regard to safety and efficiency of the plant.
Provide guidance on standards development through technical committee participation. Interprets standards and recommenced changes to reduce costs associated with overly stringent requirements.
Lead unit performance and capacity tests and prepare testing procedures.
Conduct risk assessment and process equipment performance test.
Lead Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Hazard and Operability (HAZOP), Energy optimization/conservation and process &equipment optimization & feasibility studies.
Develop implementation plan for critical recommendation and perform management of change (MOC)
Verify system operations and performance after implementing the recommendation.
Provide day to day technical support to operation and maintenance teams, to troubleshoot and fix process equipment.
Review project proposals and detailed design packages for new and/or existing facilities and enhance Operations Instruction Manuals (OIM).
Minimum requirements
As the successful candidate you will have:
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from a recognized and approved program.
You should have a minimum of 10 to 15 years of professional engineering experience in Sulfur Recovery.
Confident with engineering and design principles related to process engineering.
Experience in process engineering and design applications.
Able to demonstrate a detailed knowledge of industry standards and procedures, such as American Petroleum Institute (API) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) codes.
Required to support the review of company standards, projects reviews and implementation of plant modifications to process systems.
Experience with creating Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) & Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), troubleshooting process equipment and system failures, including pumps, compressors, pipe line/ piping and dehydration systems and Knowledge of Aspen HYSIS and other process simulation software is required.
Able to conduct a failure analysis, and provide recommendations for failed process systems and sequence of event reporting.
