Balch & Bingham was founded in 1922.
Martin's private practice in Birmingham was joined by Judge Fritz Thompson and Perry Turner to form Martin, Thompson & Turner in 1922.
Attorneys and staff will enjoy a production of Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963 at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.
In 1983, then known as Balch, Bingham, Baker, Hawthorne, Williams & Ward, the firm merged with Montgomery partnership Smith, Bowman, Thagard, Crook & Culpeper, expanding the firm's presence in Montgomery.
In 1985, the firm's name was changed to Balch & Bingham in recognition of partners Eason Balch and John Bingham.
Beginning in 2010, Balch & Bingham assisted the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality in litigation against BP for environmental damages following the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
In August 2010, the firm was hired by the Governor of Alabama to conduct a special investigation into the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal.
Carney made his way to Birmingham in 2010.
In April 2012, Balch & Bingham acquired Birmingham-based Presley Burton & Collier, along with Jacksonville-based Stoneburner, Berry, Gocker, Purcell & Greenhut PA later that year.
In March of 2015, the firm was hired by the Lee May, CEO of DeKalb County, Georgia, to investigate improper spending by government officials.
In 2015, after much research, Carney crafted his hot chicken concept and took the leap to begin his own food truck, Eugene’s Hot Chicken, named in honor of his late stepfather, Eugene, who was a big influence on Zebbie’s life.
Upon returning to the United States in 2015, Ace continued to focus on fashion and retail.
A graduate of Troy University, Cheryl formed ZealRiver in 2016, bringing more than 20 years of industry leadership and long-term client relationships to the company.
It was in 2017 that Carney decided to open his first brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Uptown Entertainment District.
Carolyn was recently recognized as a recipient of Google’s inaugural Black Founder Fund and was named 2018 Entrepreneur of the Year by Envolve Global.

In 2019, the firm filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office against the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the Mississippi River Commission.
“Ninety percent of black and brown businesses weren’t able to secure PPP and other stimulus funding,” Carolyn said. “And as a result, 41 percent of Black businesses shut their doors permanently in 2020.
With an understanding that minority- and women-owned businesses are critical contributors to not only America’s economy, but to the vibrant social fabric of individual communities, Balch was proud to launch Balch Business Boost in late 2020.
