It all started in 1883 with one remarkable woman – a Philadelphia school teacher named Margaret Bancroft.
The latter part of the 1900’s was a progressive time for people with developmental disabilities with a greater focus and respect for human rights, including the right to an education and the right to live and work in the community.
MacCracken enlisted the interest of Helen Miller Gould Shepard, who, in memory of her father, Jay Gould, had already provided funds for the erection of the Gould Memorial Library and a dormitory (Gould Hall). With her aid the Hall of Fame was established in 1900.
In 1904, Margaret Bancroft acquired property on the coast of Maine to provide the students with a camp program to escape the summer heat.
Doctor Clarence York had come to Bancroft in 1950 to work with the Cooley sisters.
Following Kuhn, Loeb’s merger with Lehman Brothers in 1977 the business model falls out of practice until modernized and revived by Bancroft more than 20 years later.
