Bank Street College of Education company history timeline

1916

The origins of the school lie in the Bureau of Educational Experiments, which was established in 1916 by Lucy Sprague Mitchell, her husband Wesley Clair Mitchell, and Harriet Merrill Johnson; Lucy Mitchell's cousin Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge provided financial support.

1919

In 1919 the bureau started a nursery school for children from fifteen to thirty-six months old; Harriet Johnson was the director.

1930

In 1930 the bureau opened an elementary school and a teacher-training school at 69 Bank Street, where new curriculums were developed, classroom material was produced, and children’s books were written.

1951

Designed to expose student teachers to new physical, social, and political environments and expand their concept of human geography, the Long Trip continues until 1951.

1956

1958

In 1958, the college received a $1,000,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare for a five-year study on how schools for younger children could improve mental health development.

1996

In 1996, it is revived in its current form.

2010

In 2010, its programs are relocated to the Graduate School’s Office of Professional Studies and Development.
