For well over 100 years, Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, has offered a progressive education that combines intellectual rigor with creative pursuits, civic involvement and unique interdisciplinary opportunities. In their first semesters at Bard, all students undertake theme-based courses that examine a particular idea through the lens of various disciplines. Students then undertake a major area of study, which could be chosen from some of the following: * Art History * Film and Video Production * Physics * Religious Studies Additional Interdivisional majors allow students to focus on a topic from the perspective of different disciplines. Graduate degrees also feature Interdisciplinary studies, such as the MFA, which combines such artistic disciplines as: * Music * Painting * Photography * Writing Civic involvement is a large part of the Bard experience, and includes student internships and community involvement in a variety of capacities. Bard's college life features a strong creative arts component. Bard's Performing Arts Center, for example, attracts world-class dance, music and theatre performers and attracts audiences from throughout the greater Hudson Valley region. Undergraduate admissions takes various factors into account, including GPA (usually 3.5 or higher), high school courses taken, recommendation letters, extracurricular activities and the admissions essay. SAT scores are optional. Bard has a number of financial aid options. Students in the music and science programs may apply for a full tuition scholarship, which covers all four years of school. A limited number of additional scholarships are awarded to first-generation students with a strong academic record. Additionally, students may apply for need-based aid like Pell grants and work-study. Federal loans may be used supplement other types of aid.
