Barnes Group company history timeline

1893

When Wallace died in 1893 at the age of 65, he left an estate appraised at about $70,000--not as much as one might expect from such an active businessman, but reflective of his varied interests.

1910

By 1910, when C.F Barnes's son Fuller joined the company, Barnes was employing a workforce of about 200.

1943

Associated's total payroll jumped to 6,000 in 1943, when shipments hit an all-time high of $31 million.

1946

Sales in 1946 hit $22.6 million and the company was still employing more than 4,000 workers.

1946: Associated Spring begins trading shares publicly.

1963

1963: Associated Spring is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

1964

To that end, Associated purchased Bowman Products Company in 1964, giving it an instant and significant stature as a distributor of repair and replacement parts.

1976

Because of the widened scope of the organization, its name was changed in 1976 from Associated Spring to Barnes Group Inc.

1981

Their concerns were confirmed in 1981, when net income plunged from $24 million to just $5 million.

1990

Martin had served stints with several manufacturers before joining Barnes in 1990.

1996

The Bowman Distribution and Curtis Industries brand names remained in place, as did the Mechanic's Choice, a line Curtis had acquired from Avnet in 1996.

1998

1998: New CEO Edmund Carpenter sets company on acquisition path.

1999

Cleveland area-based Nitrogen Gas Products, the nitrogen gas spring operation of Teledyne Fluid Systems, was acquired in August 1999.

2000

Still Expanding After 2000

2003

By 2003 the acquisition drive had raised the number of employees to 6,100 at 60 sites around the world.

Net income rose 22 percent in 2003 to $33 million.

2004

2004: Nine acquisitions in five years have added $370 million to annual sales.
