Bay State College company history timeline

1946

Bay State College opened in 1946 to serve a single industry, the airlines, by providing students with hands-on skills and paying particular attention to a strong educational foundation.

1957

The university was originally named the State College for Alameda County when it was officially established by the California State Assembly in 1957.

1959

The first academic year began in 1959 at Sunset High School in Cherryland with 25 faculty and 293 students.

1962

California State College Trustees rename institution to California State College at Palos Verdes on July 12, 1962.

1966

California State College Trustees rename institution to California State College, Dominguez Hills on March 3, 1966.

Dedication Ceremonies and Open House are held Wednesday, October 26, 1966.

In 1966, upon completion of the Portsmouth Campus, the Nursing Program became a college offering.

1972

In 1972, the name of the state college system was changed and the campus became California State University, Hayward.

1977

California State University Board of Trustees votes to approve university status to the college on September 12, 1977, and institution is renamed California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Designed during President Donald Gerth's tenure as university president, the University Logo first makes an appearance in campus newspapers on September 28, 1977.

1987

Pioneer Heights, the first university-owned student housing on campus, opened its doors in 1987.

1992

The university expanded its reach to Contra Costa County in 1992, opening a satellite campus in Concord.

2005

The university changed its name to California State University, East Bay in 2005 to reflect its new regional positioning.

2022
