Baylor School company history timeline

1893

On September 12, 1893, Baylor's University School opens in an old house in downtown Chattanooga with a student body of 31 boys ranging in age from 10 to 17.

Baylor School was founded in 1893 by John Roy Baylor, a graduate of the University of Virginia.

1900

In 1900, a small group of dedicated physicians and community leaders started a medical school in Dallas to improve the practice of medicine in North Texas.

1903

In 1903, the school affiliated with Baylor University in Waco.

1905

The school has maintained a strong rivalry with the crosstown boys-only McCallie School ever since McCallie's founding in 1905.

1915

In 1915, with the help of philanthropist John Thomas Lupton, Baylor moved to its current location overlooking the Tennessee River.

1925

In 1925, the school began calling itself "Baylor School" in honor of its founder, who died in the following year.

1929

Doctor Alexander Guerry becomes the school's second headmaster.1929 - Doctor Guerry leaves to become president of the University of Chattanooga and later the University of the South.

1943

The College opened in Houston July 12, 1943, in a converted Sears, Roebuck & Co. building, with 131 students.

In 1943, the MD Anderson Foundation invited Baylor University College of Medicine to join the newly formed Texas Medical Center.

1948

In 1948, Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., joined the faculty as chair of the Department of Surgery, and the following year, The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences was established.

1976

In 1976 the nationally acclaimed Walkabout outdoor program began the tradition of taking seniors on a two-week climbing, rafting, and backpacking trip in lieu of final exams.

2015

On May 1, 2015, the Roy and Lillie Cullen Building was dedicated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
