Summary
Pharmacy interns, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist in various activities of the pharmacy department. Through the leadership of the Pharmacy Manager, the pharmacy intern is responsible for the essential functions and responsibilities outlined in this document, noting every employee is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned. Job Requirements
1) Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the position to which he/she is assigned and performs various functions associated with the institutional drug distribution system and in accordance with regulatory and compliance standards included in functions 2-6.
2) Accurately compounds, pre-packages, and re-packages medications, including labeling for bulk solid /liquid dosage forms according to department policy/procedure. Accurately prepares and distributes controlled substances according to department policy/procedure.
3) Employee must also be capable of performing the calculations required for the usual dosage determinations and solutions preparation using weight and volume equivalents in both the metric and apothecary systems.
4) Maintains a working knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy department. This includes identifying medications that are light sensitive, requires refrigeration, are caustic, or poisonous. Employee is also able to use reference books to locate stability information or material safety data sheets.
5) Operates automated technology (Parata Robot, ScriptPro Robot, computers, etc.) in accordance to policy, procedures and manufacturing instructions. Appropriately utilizes the automated dispensing machines to facilitate medication dispensing in accordance with BH policy and procedure.
6) Performs the essential functions relating to drug purchasing and inventory control as needed.
7) Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees. Participates in the BH staff development program - Performance Evaluation (PE) and works to meet departmental, professional, and personal goals. Maintains a working knowledge of medication error prevention methods and handling/preparation techniques for high-risk or high-alert medications, including LASA medications. Understands population-specific preparation procedures (geriatric, adult, pediatric, and neonatal dosage forms and products).
8) Customer Service & Teamwork:
Interacts effectively with other members of the department and health care team on a regular basis. Maintains attentiveness to the rights of patients. Maintains confidentiality of patient information. Triages orders, determines priorities, processes orders and notifies the pharmacist as appropriate.
Receives and refers incoming calls for the department, handles pharmacy window.

Research will focus on novel modes of auditory stimulation with an array of auditory prothesis, including cochlear implants and auditory brainstem implants using electrical, magnetic and optogenetic stimulation. Responsibilities of the laboratory technician including a wide range intricate in-vivo surgeries using transgenic mouse strains and guinea pigs including stereotaxic injection, auditory brainstem implantation, cochlear implantation, middle ear and inner ear injections, as well as maintaining animal colonies, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, data analysis and contributions to clinical reviews.

* Assembles and prepares chemotherapeutic agents if needed including the aseptic transfer of chemotherapy agents to large volume parenterals using aseptic technique to assure sterility and negative pressure technique to assure no drug contact.
* Prepare extemporaneous dosage forms not available from commercial sources.
* Assembles and prepares medications for unit dose prepackaging.
* Performs and records daily temperature checks of nursing unit refrigerators.
* Inventories and restocks supplies on shelves in immediate fill area on a daily basis.

* Performs good customer service skills via telephone or in person at Pharmacy window and while rounding on patient care areas.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This position provides an opportunity for students who would like to gain experience in a fast-paced, acute care nursing environment. This position is offered to nursing students actively enrolled in a RN nursing program accredited through the ACEN or CCNE.
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
D5A and NIU Neurosciences are a 37 bed neuro-acute and 9 bed neuro-intercare department within a 4-time Magnet designated organization.
We provide comprehensive care for complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, brain injuries, spinal injuries, spinal surgeries, and brain and spinal tumors.
The Neurosciences Department is composed of a collaborative team of dedicated professionals geared towards achieving excellence in patient-centered care.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:
The Apprentice Nurse will function in a supportive role to a Registered Nurse and work collaboratively with the health care team in the management of patient care. This position allows the student to gain experience in providing care to a diverse patient population and to develop strong communication and organizational skills.
The Apprentice Nurse will perform direct patient care (hygiene, skin care, mobility and assistance with elimination needs), obtain and record vital signs, collect laboratory specimens, document intake/output, communicate effectively with patients/staff, promote patient safety and function as a team member within the health system.

SCHEDULE:
Must work a minimum of 200 hours annually, excluding orientation time. Preferably, an ANP I will work 36 hours in a 12-week period if feasible while actively enrolled and participating in classes. This can be (4, 8, or 12-hour shifts) during the school year
During the summer 24 hours per week fulfilled in an 8- or 12-hour shift along with a weekend requirement of 24 hours every four weeks
This position rotates among 16 medical, surgical, and cardiac adult inpatient floors at Baystate Medical Center, 759 Chestnut Street, Springfield MA
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school degree or equivalent required
Currently actively enrolled and participating in an accredited Registered Nurse nursing program
Current American Heart Association BLS for the Health Care provider CPR Certification required
Successfully completed 1 clinical rotation (including Fundamentals) or has 6 months of applicable direct patient care experience
