BBC Worldwide Transportation company history timeline

1979

Prior to 1979, several BBC departments dealt with the exploitation and sale of BBC brands and programmes.

1986

On 1 April 1986, all commercial activities of the corporation, including BBC Publications, was merged into BBC Enterprises Ltd.

1989

The fall of the Wall A series of events in 1989 led to one of the 20th Century’s most significant moments

1991

In July 1991 the first freight train travelled along the line from China to Kazakhstan's then-capital of Almaty.

1995

BBC Enterprises Ltd was subsequently reorganised on 1 January 1995 as BBC Worldwide Ltd.

Both countries signed the agreement allowing Kazakhstan to use Lianyungang Port for cargo traffic in 1995.

1997

In 1997 Kazakhstan's national railroad company, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) was created, owning and operating the national railroad infrastructure and providing transportation services.

2001

2001 marks the beginning of the re-structuring program of railway transport in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

2002

2004

In 2004, Kazakhstan saw the completion of the construction of Khromtau-Altynsarino, a 404 km long railway line connecting the Kostanay and Aktyubinsk regions.

A review of the BBC's commercial activities took place in 2004 and concluded that the sell off of BBC Worldwide's assets would not be as advantageous as keeping the business and driving it harder.

2008

In 2008 Shar - Ust-Kamenogorsk, a 150 km long railway line, connecting the national railway network within the borders of Kazakhstan is completed opening up the export and transit potential of Kazakhstan.

2009

In January 2009, it was announced that Ofcom had put forward the recommendation that Channel 4 merge with either the commercial network Five or BBC Worldwide.

2011

In 2011 Egyptians took to the streets calling for the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak

2012

In December 2012 a rail link through the Korgas Pass is completed linking the China-Kazakhstan border with China’s inland railways.

In 2012, the company began to reorganise their divisions from a product based system to a location-based system, resulting in Jana Bennett leaving the company.

2013

In 2013, BBC Worldwide sold Lonely Planet to Kentucky billionaire Brad Kelley's NC2 Media for US$75 million (£51.5 million)— significantly less than the £130.2 million the BBC had paid for the company, at an £80 million loss.

2014

In 2014 a 930-kilometer rail link, running from Ozen, western Kazakhstan through Turkmenistan to Gorgan in north-western Iran, speeds up cargo transit and cuts 600km off the journey from Beyneu in western Kazakhstan to Mashhad in northern Iran.

2015

2015 saw the development of FEZ Khorgos gateway.

2016

In December 2016, BBC Worldwide and ITV plc announced BritBox, an international subscription streaming brand focusing on British television.

2017

The service was planned to launch first in the United States in 2017, with AMC Networks as a local partner.
