Beacon’s journey from a small regional firm with 32 employees to a corporation with more than 400 locations and $7 billion in revenue started in Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1928.
Very few of us can remember what things were like in 1952, and fewer still can say they were there when it all began.
They returned to San Francisco with the determination to capitalize on the underutilized value of school sites and subsequently the first Beacon Center opened in 1996.
Beacon was founded in 2001, immediately after the tragedy of September 11th.
In 2003, when Beacon Group was founded, our principals developed the essential vision for our business - centering around integrity and service quality rather than profit.
On May 9, 2009, Beacon Group incorporated to become an independent firm by merging of two others.
In the spring of 2016, our key funders, San Francisco’s Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF), and the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) asked us to consider an expanded vision of the Beacon and its reach.
Over the next few years, Beacon Centers spread across San Francisco and were in 8 priority neighborhoods, and now expanded to 27 in 2018.
