Reports to the Coordinator/Director. Operates basic radiologic equipment determining the quality and quantity of ionizing radiation to make quality radiographs on injured and/or sick patients as directed by physicians following accepted policies and procedures under the direction of radiologists. Performs Procedures and Examinations: * Performs Radiology procedures and examinations according to physician's orders and department policies and procedures. * Evaluates radiographs for technical quality to ensure accurate diagnosis. * Exhibits skilled positioning techniques when needed in unusual situations, such as trauma, surgical or immobile patients to ensure the most diagnostic images possible. * Consults with the Pain Service Physician to obtain correct levels to be viewed. * Understands how to obtain the best image while minimizing exposure, including Boost, Pulse, and Protocol Selection. * Prepares a sterile set-up for each procedure performed under fluoroscopy according to AORN Standards. * Able to prep a patient using proper technique according to AORN Standards. * Turns over procedure room in a timely manner using approved cleansing agents. Image Management/Record Keeping: * Obtains accurate patient histories from patient, nurse caring for the patient and the physician, documents in the appropriate manner. * Checks patient exam charges to ensure correct patient charging (credit, cancel, revise, add, etc.) * Results procedural information into the RIS in a timely manner. * Ensures images are in proper files on PACS. * Notifies appropriate person when corrections on PACS need to be made with images/files. * Enters patient information accurately into the C-arm. * Prints pictures, a chart copy and one for the patient. Equipment Operation/Room Responsibility: * Recognizes problems with equipment operation to correct problems. * Communicates to proper person for needed repairs to ensure correct operation. * Operates all diagnostic imaging equipment. * Provide clean/sanitary examination room and department for the patient. * Troubleshoots diagnostic imaging equipment for problems. Miscellaneous: * Follows hospital radiation safety regulations. * Wears radiation badge at all times and submits badge monthly for testing. * Orients new staff and students to work areas upon request. * Accurately badges daily clocking, YTO, holidays and call (or timely completion of the "purple" correction form). * Performs any other duties as assigned by the supervisor. * Utilizes e-mail appropriately to receive communication and to communicate to others. Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department: * Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned. ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Associate complies with the following organizational requirements: * Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared. * Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes. * Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes. * Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year. * Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department. * Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self. * Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance. * Complies with established organization and department policies. * Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required. Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of some college or vocational training. ARRT or ARRT eligible, State Certification required. No previous experience is required. Graduate of Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation (AMA) Accredited Radiography Program. Must have valid 'General Certification' from Indiana State Board of Health. Must complete CR Specialist Manual within 120 days of obtaining full/part time position or within 6 months if PRN associate. Knowledge & Skills: * Must possess excellent Radiographer skills in regards to positioning, technique, film critique and department protocols in relationship to film/screen and/or Computed Radiography. * Must have extensive computer knowledge of Computed Radiography, Radiologists/E.R. Physicians workstations, Clinical View, PACS Broker and Radiology Department networking to perform quality assurance testing, troubleshoot, and teaching/assisting Radiographers. * Must possess excellent teaching skills with the abilities to listen, learn and understand exam difficulties in order to help provide solutions for the best exam possible for instructing Radiology Students. * Extensive knowledge of a functioning Radiology Department. * Must have knowledge of radiation protection and understand and utilize the methods to protect patients, self and staff. * Must pass ARRT within 9 months of hire for radiographer position. Working Conditions: * Must be able to take call and arrive at Hospital within 30 minutes of being called in. * Eye strain from RIS system and other computer monitors. Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities, as indicated below, are normally acquired through the successful completion of some college or vocational training. ARRT or ARRT eligible. State Certification required. No previous experience is required. Graduate of Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation (AMA) Accredited Radiography Program. Must have a valid 'General Certification' from the Indiana State Board of Health. Must complete the CR Specialist Manual within 120 days of obtaining full/part time position or within 6 months if PRN associate. Knowledge & Skills: * Must possess excellent Radiographer skills in regards to positioning, technique, film critique and department protocols in relationship to film/screen and/or Computed Radiography. * Must have extensive computer knowledge of Computed Radiography, Radiologists/E.R. Physicians workstations, Clinical View, PACS Broker and Radiology Department networking to perform quality assurance testing, troubleshoot, and teaching/assisting Radiographers. * Must possess excellent teaching skills with the abilities to listen, learn and understand exam difficulties in order to help provide solutions for the best exam possible for instructing Radiology Students. * Extensive knowledge of a functioning Radiology Department. * Must have knowledge of radiation protection and understand and utilize the methods to protect patients, self and staff. * Must pass ARRT within 9 months of hire for radiographer position. The Part-Time Radiology Technologist operates radiologic equipment to produce high-quality diagnostic images for patients as directed by physicians. Key Responsibilities Procedures and Examinations * Perform radiologic procedures according to physician orders and departmental protocols. * Apply proper immobilization devices and utilize skilled positioning techniques for optimal imaging, including trauma and post-surgical cases. * Evaluate radiographs for technical quality to ensure accurate diagnosis while minimizing patient exposure. * Correctly use primary and secondary markers to identify images. * Adhere to universal precautions, ergonomic standards, and protective equipment requirements. Equipment Operation, Image Management, and Documentation * Identify and troubleshoot basic equipment issues; report problems for timely repair. * Ensure accurate patient identification and image labeling prior to submission to PACS. * Provide complete and accurate patient history to radiologists to aid diagnosis. * Verify exam charges and make necessary corrections in a timely manner. * Mark cases for radiologist dictation and communicate image corrections to appropriate personnel. * Participate in the orientation and training of new staff and students. Performs computerized tomography (CT) scans and procedures that require independent judgment and a high degree of precision and skill in the application of high technology computerized CT equipment. Follows protocols and procedures as directed by the radiologist and/or supervising technologist. Performs computerized tomography (CT) scans of all parts of the body according to prescribed protocols, policies and procedures by: * Obtaining pertinent clinical history necessary for the radiologist to interpret the CT scans. Communicating with referring physicians and other health care personnel, calling reports as needed. * Explaining CT procedure to patient and family as needed. * Practicing sterile and isolation techniques to prevent contamination. * Starts IV for contrast media injection. * Performing IV injection for contrast media administration; obtaining appropriate allergy history, assessing patient condition and reporting to the radiology nurse or radiologist as needed; performing CPR and other supportive emergency procedures. * Preparing final paperwork and scan into the PACs system. * Efficient at downtime procedures. * Properly tracking examinations using the Radiology information system. * Performing CT computer boot up and shut-down functions, reporting malfunctions of equipment to Radiology Services Engineer or calling for service, and maintaining equipment accessories in a clean and orderly manner. Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by: * Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned. * Orients and trains new staff. * Works with job shadow, students, etc., to familiarize with CT. * Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required. * Reporting supply order to appropriate person. * Keep examination room and department clean and stocked with supplies. * Maintaining personal licenses and assuring that the minimum number of CEU's have been met. * Assist with all quality control of equipment as assigned by the Coordinator/Director. * Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process, and compliance. * Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes. * Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes. * Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department. * Establish and maintain great working relationships with other departments within the area. Knowledge & Skills * Requires the knowledge of radiation emitting units. * Demonstrates skills to position patients properly for all examinations. * Demonstrates well-developed communication skills to understand written and verbal instructions. * Exhibits an interest in scientific, technical and computer knowledge to master the principal protocols in obtaining CT images with minimal exposure to the patient. * Requires the computer skills necessary to maintain accurate patient treatment records. Working Conditions * Works in a clinical environment with hazards due to radiation. * Wears lead protective aprons and gloves during surgical procedures; must wear film badge and maintain strictly controlled standards. Physical Demands * Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
