Throughout the eighteenth century, St Peter’s had been the poorest and least developed of the four parishes of the Beaufort District.¹ In 1800, St Peter’s Parish was still the poorest, with 2,669 slaves, fewer than half the number in neighboring St Luke’s Parish.

In 1852, the old arsenal in Beaufort was expanded to accommodate a garrison of 250 men and six guns.
The town was incorporated in 1874.
The town of Chocowinity served as the railroad hub of the Norfolk Southern Railway starting in 1910.
A bridge connecting Hilton Head to the mainland was built in 1956.
The economy now depends mainly on light industry, the United States Marine Corps installation at Parris Island (which was annexed by Port Royal town in 2002), and tourism.
