What You Will Do as the MDS Coordinator (RN)

As the MDS Coordinator, you will be responsible for managing and directing the process of MDS completion and plan of care. Other responsibilities include managing the overall process and tracking all Medicare/Medicaid documents to assure achievement of the maximum allowable RUG categories. You will integrate information from nursing, dietary, social services, activities, therapy, and physician services to ensure appropriate reimbursement.
Some of your primary responsibilities include:
Tracking all Medicare/Managed patients to determine continued and appropriate Medicare/skilled eligibility and benefits period by determining skilled level of need
Performing concurrent MDS reviews to ensure appropriate RUGs category is achieved through the capture of appropriate clinical information. Identifying opportunities to enhance reimbursement
Participating in weekly Medicare meetings to promote appropriate nursing documentation and identifying nursing needs. Working closely with nursing team leadership and collaborating with therapy and the billing office to ensure correct diagnosis codes, ARD dates, and RUG levels
Maintaining an accurate schedule of all MDS assessments to include reference dates throughout the patient's stay and ensures accurate and timely submission of the MDS assessment including case-mix, OBRA, and OMRA.
Managing data entry function to the accuracy of the MDS and verifying electronic transmissions to CMS
Coordinating with the Business Office monthly, to communicate case-mix data required for billing such as RUG categories, modifiers, state case-mix scores, etc.
Completing Triple Check Process monthly to ensure accuracy of assessments, reference dates, therapy minutes/units, diagnosis codes, and RUG levels prior to billing
Providing case-mix and ADL coding education as needed

Education, Licensure & Certification Requirements
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with an active RN license
Minimum of one (1) year experience in long term care clinical nursing experience required
Experience with Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, MDS completion, clinical resource utilization, and/or case management is highly desired
Proficiency with computers; prefer experience with Point Click Care (PCC) and Microsoft Office
