  • Research Scientist, Dynamical Systems & AI

    Becoming 4.4company rating

Becoming job in San Francisco, CA

Becoming is building Developmental Intelligence: AI for predicting how organisms change over time. Most existing models work in short-horizon or static regimes. They fail when systems become long-horizon, nonlinear, and context-dependent - exactly where development, biology, and many real-world systems live. We are building a new modeling primitive for reasoning about complex dynamics over time, starting with developmental biology and extending to other domains where prediction fundamentally breaks. The Role We are hiring a Research Scientist to help verify, validate, and shape a new modeling primitive designed for complex, time-evolving systems. This role is not about incremental model improvements or benchmark chasing. Your responsibility is to rigorously evaluate whether this primitive works, where it works, where it fails, and why. You will help define its scope, limits, and evolution through careful analysis, experimentation, and comparison to existing approaches. Your work will directly influence how the platform develops and how broadly it can be applied. What You'll Own Validation of a new AI modeling primitive for long-horizon dynamical systems Design of experiments and benchmarks that test stability, generalization, and predictive fidelity over time Comparative evaluation against existing modeling approaches Identification of failure modes, assumptions, and edge cases Clear articulation of why the model succeeds or fails in different regimes Translation of findings into guidance for future architecture and system design Exploration of applicability across multiple domains with complex dynamics, not just biology Who You Are You are someone who: Operates with high agency - you identify problems, define solutions, and execute Brings high energy to complex, ambiguous engineering challenges Acts with high integrity - you are honest about tradeoffs, risks, and failure modes Communicates directly and clearly, especially when something won't work Is self-aware about your strengths and gaps, and proactively fills them Thinks naturally in terms of dynamics, stability, and generalization Enjoys stress-testing models to understand their limits Is comfortable working on foundational problems with ambiguous answers Requirements Required PhD or equivalent experience in applied mathematics, physics, computer science, machine learning, or a related field At least 1 year of industry or applied research experience working on real modeling systems Strong grounding in dynamical systems, time-series modeling, control, or sequence modeling Experience evaluating models where ground truth is partial, delayed, or noisy Ability to design validation strategies when standard benchmarks are insufficient Comfort working with first-of-its-kind architectures and open-ended questions Strong Signals Experience with state-space models, world models, neural ODEs, diffusion over time, or hybrid approaches Prior work on systems where prediction degrades over long horizons Exposure to biological, physical, or other real-world dynamical systems Track record of identifying why models fail - not just improving metrics Benefits Competitive salary and meaningful equity Full benefits High-trust, high-ownership environment Rapid growth in scope and responsibility

  • Hardware Engineer (Product / Systems)

    Becoming 4.4company rating

Becoming job in San Francisco, CA

Becoming is building Developmental Intelligence: AI for predicting how organisms change over time. Most experimental systems fail when metabolic demands become too high. We are building systems that don't - by combining engineered metabolic environments, sensing, control, and software into tightly integrated products that operate reliably over long time horizons. Hardware is core to our platform. It must work continuously, predictably, and under real biological constraints. The Role We are hiring a Hardware Engineer (Product / Systems) to design, build, and own end-to-end hardware products at the core of Becoming's platform. This role is for a product-minded builder, not a siloed specialist. You will work across mechanical, electrical, and firmware, owning systems from first principles through prototyping, iteration, deployment, and operation. You may peak in one domain, but you must be fluent enough in the others to design and debug complete systems without handoffs. This is a high-agency role. You will help define requirements, make tradeoffs, and take responsibility for outcomes. What You'll Own End-to-end ownership of hardware systems used in long-horizon biological platforms Mechanical design: CAD, materials, tolerances, assemblies, fluidic and environmental systems Electrical design: sensing, actuation, power, control electronics, bring-up, and debugging Firmware and low-level software for control, monitoring, fault handling, and reliability Rapid prototyping, testing, failure analysis, and iteration Integration of hardware with software, data systems, and biological constraints Build processes and documentation that enable repeatability and scaling Debugging real systems under continuous operation, not just bench tests Who You Are You are someone who: Operates with high agency - you identify problems, define solutions, and execute Takes end-to-end ownership of what you build Brings high energy to complex, ambiguous engineering challenges Acts with high integrity - you are honest about tradeoffs, risks, and failure modes Communicates directly and clearly, especially when something won't work Is self-aware about your strengths and gaps, and proactively fills them Thinks like a systems integrator, not a narrow specialist Cares deeply about understanding systems at a first-principles level Requirements Degree in engineering or equivalent practical experience At least 1 year of industry experience building real hardware systems (startup, robotics, instrumentation, hardware, or related field) Demonstrated first-principles depth in at least one core domain (mechanical, electrical, or firmware) Functional fluency across the other domains sufficient to design, build, and debug complete systems Proven ability to take loosely defined problems and turn them into working, reliable products Comfort operating without pre-validated platforms, heavy vendor abstraction, or rigid process scaffolding Strong Signals Experience with fluidic, perfusion, or environmental control systems Background in robotics, scientific instrumentation, or complex electromechanical products Experience bringing hardware from prototype to deployed, continuously operating systems Bias toward reliability, robustness, and simplicity over novelty Benefits Competitive salary and meaningful equity Full benefits High-trust, high-ownership environment Rapid growth in scope and responsibility

You will lead the design and operation of systems that integrate perfusion, physiology, sensing, actuation, and closed-loop control to sustain and perturb development in ways that generate meaningful, causal data. This is a high-agency role. You will be expected to define measurements, interpret dynamics, and drive improvements in system-level function. What You'll Own End-to-end responsibility for externally sustained developmental systems operating over days to weeks Definition of what “success” means beyond “alive,” including how stability, drift, and failure are measured over time Identification, characterization, and mitigation of long-horizon failure modes (e.g., drift, inflammation, hemolysis, interface breakdown) Design and refinement of closed-loop control strategies for complex biological systems Integration of perfusion hardware, sensors, and control software into durable platforms Decisions about when systems are sufficiently stable to perturb, compare, and learn from Close collaboration with developmental biology, hardware, and ML / modeling teams Building systems that improve with iteration, not systems that require constant manual expert intervention Who You Are You are someone who: Operates with high agency - you identify what needs to be measured and why Takes ownership of outcomes, not just data collection Brings high energy to complex, dynamic biological systems Acts with high integrity - you are honest about uncertainty, limits, and tradeoffs Communicates directly and clearly, especially when systems are not behaving as expected Is self-aware about your strengths and gaps, proactively fills them and open to feedback Thinks like a systems integrator, not a siloed specialist Is comfortable working where physiology, engineering, and modeling intersect Requirements Required Deep, hands-on experience with long-running biological or physiological systems (days+, not hours) PhD or equivalent experience in physiology, engineering, or a related field Experience with several of the following: Perfusion systems involving blood or blood analogs Hemodynamics, flow, pressure, and shear - and their biological consequences Inflammation, coagulation, hemolysis, or endothelial failure in sustained systems Closed-loop control of noisy, drifting systems Real-time instrumentation and sensing in biological environments Diagnosing failure modes that emerge gradually, not catastrophically Ability to work fluently with developmental biologists and/or physiologists At least 1 year of industry or applied systems experience Strong Signals Background in perfusion, ECMO, organ support, or normothermic preservation Physiology-driven systems engineering experience Experience with complex robotics or control systems operating in irreversible environments History of systems that failed - and improved because of it Benefits Competitive salary and meaningful equity Full benefits High-trust, high-ownership environment Rapid growth in scope and responsibility

  • Developmental Physiologist

    Becoming 4.4company rating

Becoming job in San Francisco, CA

Becoming is building Developmental Intelligence: AI for predicting how organisms change over time. Most experimental systems fail when metabolic demands become too high. We are building systems that don't - enabling sustained, controllable biological processes over long time horizons so that development, adaptation, and failure can be observed, perturbed, and predicted. Physiology is central to this effort. Without stable, well-characterized physiological function, long-horizon prediction is impossible. The Role We are hiring a Developmental Physiologist to own and advance the functional and metabolic performance of developing biological systems within Becoming's platform. This role is for someone who thinks in systems, not endpoints - someone who understands how transport, metabolism, signaling, mechanics, and homeostasis interact over time. You will help define what “physiologically stable” and “physiologically meaningful” actually mean in sustained developmental systems. This is a high-agency role. You will not be handed protocols to run. You will be expected to define measurements, interpret dynamics, and drive improvements in system-level function. What You'll Own Definition and measurement of physiological function over time in developing biological systems Characterization of metabolic demand, exchange, and stability under sustained operation Design of assays and readouts for oxygenation, nutrient utilization, waste removal, and energy balance Interpretation of how physiological variables influence developmental trajectories and system behavior Identification of failure modes when systems lose stability - and strategies to prevent them Close collaboration with biology, hardware, and modeling teams to align physiology with system design Translation of physiological complexity into clear, decision-relevant signals Who You Are You are someone who: Operates with high agency - you identify what needs to be measured and why Takes ownership of outcomes, not just data collection Brings high energy to complex, dynamic biological systems Acts with high integrity - you are honest about uncertainty, limits, and tradeoffs Communicates directly and clearly, especially when systems are not behaving as expected Is self-aware about your strengths and gaps, proactively fills them and open to feedback Thinks like a systems integrator, not a siloed specialist Is comfortable working where physiology, engineering, and modeling intersect Requirements Required PhD or equivalent experience in physiology, developmental biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field At least 1 year of industry experience (biotech, pharma, startup, or applied research environment) Strong grounding in developmental or integrative physiology Experience reasoning about metabolism, transport, homeostasis, and functional performance Ability to design measurements where signals are dynamic, multivariate, and context-dependent Comfort working in fast-moving environments with incomplete information Strong Signals Experience with long-term or perfused biological systems Background in metabolic physiology, vascular physiology, or systems-level biology Experience linking physiological measurements to predictive or computational models Track record of moving beyond descriptive readouts to mechanistic understanding Benefits Competitive salary and meaningful equity Full benefits High-trust, high-ownership environment Rapid growth in scope and responsibility
