Job Title: Interventionist Location: District Assigned School Job Group: Union Support Staff Pay Level: Non-Exempt Reports To: Principal/Director of Student Support Systems/Supervising Teacher Position Summary: Provides a highly specialized and intensive program of instructional, behavioral, and/or personal support services to designated students in a variety of settings. Uses advanced training and/or acquired skill to effectively deliver programming associated with assigned student's challenges in concert with specialists. Collects data for assessing student needs and progress and contributes to the development and/or modification of an assigned student's individual education plan (IEP). Essential Duties and Responsibilities: other duties may be assigned as needed. Provides direct instruction and/or assists students in classroom settings consistent with the student's IEP. In consultation with the classroom teacher and supervising educator, may adapt materials, methods, environment factors to support students in accessing the academic standards instructed at the student's grade level. Ensures that students fully participate in classroom instruction as presented and directed by the classroom teacher. Follows district policies and procedures to include, but not limited to: instructional techniques, communication plans, and behavior management. Implements specialized programs, as directed by psychologist, behavior analyst, speech language pathologist, occupational or physical therapist, or other consulting service provider. Provides routine, personal care and assistance such as ambulation, dressing, and toileting. Implements behavior, medical, communication protocols according to IEP. Effectively administers restraint/de-escalation procedures, as needed. Provides CPR, first aid, or more intensive medical procedures, if appropriately trained, as needed. Monitors all aspects of IEP performance; conducts task analysis, data collection, and maintains records and data sheets for assigned students as required. Actively assists in planning instruction, interventions, and lessons using data collection systems. Collaborates with teachers, co-workers, parents, healthcare workers, and others to ensure an appropriate learning experience for all students. Works with team members to determine an appropriate sequence of events leading towards increased independence and greater inclusion in various settings. Implements student program objectives in various settings such as, but not limited to: classrooms, playgrounds, individual settings, job sites, community forums, and educational trips outside the classroom. Actively participates in department, student planning, and committee meetings as requested by supervising educator. Proactively models positive, constructive behavior to others. May assists the teacher in the learning environment by: Preparing instructional materials for assigned students. Organizing classrooms and setting up learning centers prior to and after activities. Helping to supervise students while they are in the lunchroom, library, music, P.E., assemblies, free play activities, and halls. Observing learning activities, acknowledging student requests for help, and referring student needs to the teacher as appropriate. Assisting in educational demonstrations for the class or small groups. Remains current on district programs and best practices in the profession; may be required to attend training. Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree in education, psychology, mental health, or similar discipline preferred. A minimum of an Associate's Degree or sixty (60) or more college level credits is required. One or more years of successful experience in a school or similar work setting where demonstrated knowledge of psychology, mental health, or similar disciplines have been applied. Demonstrated knowledge of disabilities, laws, teaching principles and methods, and instructional programming is preferred. Certifications: Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and First Aid certification is required. Completion of Interventionist training coursework within six months of employment is expected. Preffered Skills: Demonstrated knowledge in instructional strategies, developmental learning, communication strategies, use of age-appropriate materials and specialized instructional techniques (vocational skills, social skills, speech-language skills). Knowledge of learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, autism spectrum disorders, communication impairments. Knowledge of special education teaching methods, theories and laws. Good understanding of standard classroom operations and teaching methods; good ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.     Behavior Interventionist Camp Counselor Behavior Interventionist Counselor at Camp DREAM is an Americorps position, responsible for creating a supportive, safe, and fun environment for campers with shared life experiences to explore and express their identities, experience happiness, and establish healthy relationships with their peers. The Behavior Interventionist (BI) Counselor has the additional responsibility of providing one on one support for campers with support needs during the overnight session. If there are no campers in a session that require one on one support, the BI counselor will function the same as a regular counselor. Camp Counselors live in a cabin with campers and help to run camp activity areas during the day. The Camp Counselor is responsible for knowing the whereabouts of each camper under their supervision at all times while on duty and serves as a mentor for youth, helping to nurture the self-esteem, confidence and core values of every camper. Americorps members are expected to work 10 day sessions, with one 30 hour period off; as well as 3 days off between sessions. Supervise assigned cabin campers during meals, clean-up time, rest hour, evening activities, and overnight, ensuring their safety and supporting their success, with the support of co-counselor(s) or, oftentimes, solo, during the co-counselors off time. Escort campers to dining areas, cabins, recreational activities, and camp events; assist with the set-up and clean-up of recreational events, equipment, and program activities. Regularly communicate with co-counselor(s) and the leadership team about the status of the campers, including incidents that might require intervention or further monitoring and areas requiring additional personal support. Communicate with leadership staff regarding potential hazards, concerns, or incidents that may need follow-up based on individual circumstances. Facilitate camp program activities as a leader or assistant; carry out camp activities as a member of one of the following camp activity departments: Arts & Crafts, Performing Arts, Biking, Archery, Ropes, or Field. Adhere to and ensure enforcement of camp rules and communicate them positively and effectively to participants. Get to know campers and develop positive, healthy relationships. Maintain appropriate boundaries with campers and follow camp policies regarding disclosure, confidentiality, and social media involvement. Interact with and observe campers. Immediately report all injuries and illnesses, regardless of severity, to leadership staff after the nurses have taken control of the situation. Know the scheduled service and rest times. Additional Job Responsibilities for BI Counselors Provide 1:1 behavior and emotional support for a camper during the overnight session We use a model of inclusion at Camp DREAM, with the goal being camper independence. The BI counselor will work with co-staff and leadership to identify areas where the camper can be more independent, and work with the camper to develop additional independence while they are at Camp. Communicate with the Camper Care team and other BI counselors regarding support for the individual camper ***Please note that this is not an exhaustive list. As part of the Camp community, it is likely that things will arise which require you to do things that are not on this list. If you have specific questions about this, please email us or ask for clarification in your interview. Description of Camp: Camp DREAM is a joyfully rambunctious camp! We are a rustic forest environment with minimal electricity and wifi, and no phone reception. You should be able to supervise campers at all times while on duty at camp, which is broadly described in the following: A communal living situation that means actively socializing and being surrounded by other campers and staff from sun up to sun down; Lots of active outdoor activities, such as sports, swimming, boating, archery, low ropes course, and more. Every camper attends these activities, and there is a focus on collaboration and teamwork; 3 daily meals in the lodge or outdoor pavilion with up to 60 people who create a busy, bustling, and often loud environment, with excited talking, cheering, large-group singing, and games; A screen-free environment (during work hours) in which we disconnect from cell phones, video games, and the internet. Campers do not use devices during any part of the program day nor are campers permitted to wear headphones outside of the cabin. It is important to remember that by the nature of overnight camp: You will likely have a lot less alone time than you might find at home. You or your campers' schedules may change with little notice due to weather or other circumstances, and flexibility is key You should feel ok being away from home and having an independent group-living experience with 50-60 other kids and staff. Sleeping accommodations include: Cabin (4 walls and a roof) or Lean-to (3 sided cabin with roof) with 2-3 co-counselors and up to 12 campers A wooden bed frame with a 5 camp mattress Composting toilet facilities up to a 5 minute walk from your cabin No water or electricity at the tent site Benefits of Serving at Camp DREAM You will grow your adaptability, flexibility, and problem solving skills You will build your skills in behavior management.
