**PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:** Under close supervision, performs routine technical functions related to the support of development engineering activities such as design, test, checkout, fabrication, modification, and assembly of electronics and Electro-mechanical systems, experimental design circuitry, prototype models or specialized test equipment. Applications may include analog, digital and/or video type circuits and logic systems. Guidance is readily available from superiors. Works from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts or defined plans to perform routine testing, checkout, troubleshooting, prototype building, environmental testing, and simple developmental engineering tasks. Performs routine operational tests and fault isolation on development systems and equipment to ensure conformance with design specifications. Diagnoses and isolates malfunctions down to component level. Conducts defined engineering tests and collects data as assigned. Utilizes routine development or diagnostic equipment including oscilloscope, VOM, DVM, signal generators and similar test apparatus. Normally assigned in area such as development, engineering, test equipment design, or the like. Excludes those assigned to production test activities. Entry Level. Excludes trainees with no academic preparation or experience. EXPERIENCE and TRAINING: Electronics training equivalent to 2 years technical trade school or military technical school.

Responsibilities

The incumbent receives general program assignments from a supervisor or higher-level manager. Assignments are stated in terms of priorities, overall objectives, and boundaries. Provides electronics technician support of the systems engineering function for NAS air route radar systems (includes En Route Long Range Radar systems), and serves as a principle technical specialist for guidance on, and resolution of, problems associated with continued operation of commissioned facilities and resolution of problems related to the introduction of new systems into the NAS.

Applies broad experience and comprehensive technical knowledge and is considered a technical expert within the organization for assigned NAS systems and equipment. Incumbent applies electronic technician expertise to the solution of hardware/firmware problems such as modification and modernization to improve the reliability, maintainability, and safety of assigned NAS systems/equipment and facilities. Specifically, for assigned NAS systems, the incumbent performs work of broad scope providing the highest organizational level of technical support associated with in-service improvements.

Performs analyses, design, development, and implementation of system-wide hardware/firmware modifications; service life extension; failure analysis/support in response to complex NAS related problems beyond the assigned repair capability of the field; NAS configuration management; quality assurance; development and issuance of associated national technical directives and maintenance guidance.

Involved in the development and evaluation of the operational readiness and/or supportability of new NAS systems for deployment and technical support to new system acquisition efforts. Responsible for independently analyzing/resolving a wide variety of user problems and system failures involving functional and technical challenges (e.g.en route radar data/digital signal processing; en route radar antenna controls and motors; equipment/tools for controlling, monitoring, and reporting system for en route radar and other equipment in building status and health; firmware design, burn/load, debug; and/or circuit card assembly (CCA) design).

Gathers information, analyzes, evaluates, and plans course of action to resolve design/operational problems within assigned NAS systems. Analyzes system performance and fault information from field facilities to identify causes of system failures, defines and takes corrective action, or makes recommendation and seeks/influences others to support those issues wherein capability to resolve is not within NASE. Plans, organizes, coordinates, and integrates the work of multiple projects to accomplish organizational/strategic objectives related to assigned NAS systems, while maintaining cost, schedule, quality and performance.

Represents the organization as a primary technical point of contact in intra- and inter-service agency meetings relating to the technical aspects of in-service improvement, new system development, technical documentation, and resolution of problems associated with the NAS. Contacts are to furnish technical guidance and advice, share information, provide data, and discuss the statuses of assignments. These contacts can be internal and external to the organization. Represent the technical aspects of the NDP/AJW-142 program and bridge the gap between the engineering functions of second level engineering and the functions of the FAA Air Traffic Organization while maintaining good working relationships with a wide variety of individuals using tact and patience when dealing with difficult situations. Initiates contact with system users and technical counterparts to gain their cooperation to resolve problems and/or implement new equipment or system changes. Responsible for the development and delivery of technical guidance for system users.
