Headway was founded in 2019. Since then, we've grown into a diverse, national network of over 60,000 mental healthcare providers across all 50 states who run their practice on our software and have served over 1 million patients. Headway's mission is to rewire the mental healthcare system so it works for everyone. To do that, we must not only help patients and providers, we must also innovate for the payers who finance care. Our Payer Product team will lead the charge on rethinking how Headway works with insurance companies via benefits design, care navigation and more to help them deliver better care while managing costs.
In this role, you'll co-innovate with some of the largest healthcare companies in America to evolve how mental health is financed, bringing innovation and tailored solutions to a space where new approaches are long overdue.

Build innovative products that allow payers to design and deliver more flexible, effective mental health benefits
Act as a thought partner to senior executives at some of the largest payers in the country, co-creating solutions that push toward bold change
Lead and grow a team of Product Managers and engineers to execute against this vision
Balance short-term wins with long-term strategic bets that transform payer economics and patient outcomes
Partner cross-functionally to ensure payer innovation integrates seamlessly across the business
You'll be great for this role if you:
Healthcare Innovator: You have deep knowledge of payer/insurance models and are eager to reinvent how mental health is paid for and delivered
Builder-Strategist: You thrive in messy, ambiguous spaces and can create clarity, structure, and strategy where none exists
Co-Creator: You know how to partner with large, complex organizations, earning trust while pushing them toward meaningful change
Influential Communicator: You can frame bold innovation in terms that resonate with executives, employers, and product teams alike
Bonus: Experience in digital health startups, healthcare consulting, or as a founder/operator who has built in complex, regulated industries

About engineering at Headway
Building a new mental healthcare system at Headway is only possible because of the scale and leverage that software can provide. The engineering team at Headway is a small but mighty team using technology to build that future (and have a fun time while doing it!).
Principles that guide us:
Focus on the mission: We view software as a means of effecting change in the world, not as an end unto itself. We write software to empower our patients and therapists to better solve the problems they're facing.
Ship small, learn fast: We are building new and novel products and believe that we learn what our users need by quickly shipping and iteration
Everything is a product: Whether it's our patient search experience or a developer productivity improvement, we treat everything we build at Headway as a product with end-users in mind.
Optimize for trust: We believe that engineers should be continually learning. To learn effectively and to be productive, engineers must feel safe asking questions and discussing mistakes.
Tools we use:
Languages: Python 3, TypeScript
Libraries & Frameworks: FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, React, Remix, Next.js
Datastores: Postgres, Redis
Infrastructure: AWS (Fargate, ECS, S3, and more), Spark and Kafka
Monitoring: Datadog, PagerDuty, Sentry
Version Control: Github, PagerDuty
Vulnerability Management: Snyk, Semgrep
Cloud Security: Lacework
Projects we're working on:
There is a lot that we're building at Headway, but here are a few projects to give you an idea of the problems we're tackling.
Grow our network of therapists: Investing in ways to help therapists find and sign up for Headway including referral programs, SEO optimization, and more
Therapist onboarding: Building products and tooling to make it easy to get credentialed as in network with insurance companies in record time
Therapist practice management system: Building a best-in-class platform for Headway therapists to manage their patients, appointments, payments, and more.
Patient search and matching: Transforming the therapist search experience and becoming the trusted guide for patients to find the right therapist.
Who you are
We're looking for experienced engineers who have the ability to deal with ambiguity and learn new technologies and systems. Below are some additional experiences we think help engineers succeed at Headway.
For all engineers:
You have experience working across the stack on modern web applications
Strong understanding of at least one programming language and comfortability with others
Shaped work to achieve company and team goals

About the team
The Ranking & Relevance team's mission is to help every patient find the right provider for their needs. We are building the matching system that powers this connection, from search and discovery to ranking and personalization. Our goal is to combine cutting-edge machine learning with a deep understanding of patient and provider experience.
About the role
We are looking for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead the development of Headway's ranking and relevance models. You will design and build the systems that decide how patients and providers are matched, using search, recommendation, and personalization to help patients through their care journey. You will set technical direction, build the initial stack, and mentor future ML teammates.
What you'll do
At Headway, we have built the largest network of therapists who accept insurance in the country. One of our most important challenges is ensuring that patients find the right therapist for them quickly and effectively. To do this, we are investing deeply in search, ranking, and relevance systems powered by machine learning. As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer on the Patient team, you will focus on:
Matching and ranking: Design and scale ML models that power how patients discover and connect with providers.
Personalization: Use patient signals, provider attributes, and outcomes data to improve matching accuracy.
ML infrastructure: Establish the foundation for experimentation, model training, deployment, and monitoring across Headway.
Mentorship and technical leadership: Guide junior ML engineers and data scientists as the team grows, setting the bar for ML practices at Headway.
Cross-functional impact: Partner with product, engineering, and data science to define success metrics, design A/B experiments, and influence product strategy.
Who you are
You have 6+ years of experience in applied ML roles, with at least 1 year working on ranking, relevance, search, or recommender systems.
You are fluent in Python and have experience with ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, CatBoost, etc.).
You have taken ML models from research/prototype to production at scale.
You are comfortable designing and running A/B experiments, and you know how to choose the right offline and online metrics.
You combine product intuition with technical depth. You care about making the patient experience meaningfully better, not just optimizing a model score.
Nice to have
Experience with matching systems or personalization.
Familiarity with modern retrieval techniques (vector search, embeddings, semantic search).
Exposure to ML infrastructure such as feature stores, model monitoring, and retraining pipelines.
Experience with Metaflow, SageMaker, and Outerbounds.
Our interview process
After you apply to Headway, here are some details of what to expect during the interview process.
Initial screen: You'll connect with someone in recruiting so you can learn more about the team, Headway's mission and exciting growth, and we can get a better idea of your background.
First round: You'll meet with an engineer on the team to do some live coding and learn more about the engineering team.
Final rounds: You'll meet several more team members for technical and non-technical interviews and leave with a fuller picture of what it's like to work at Headway.
References and the offer: Our favorite part of the process. We'll send over all of the details, including specifics on employee equity, and congratulatory messages from excited future team members.
Compensation & Benefits:
The expected base pay range for this position is $269,790 - $317,400, based on a variety of factors including qualifications, experience, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for performance-based variable compensation and an equity grant, depending on the position and level.
