Benedict College company history timeline

1870

Benedict Institute opened on December 12, 1870.

On this date in 1870, Benedict College was established in Columbia, S.C, one of over 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in America.

1894

On November 2, 1894, the South Carolina Legislature chartered the institution as a liberal arts college and the name “Benedict Institute” was formally changed to “Benedict College.”

1930

The first African-American president of Benedict was the Reverend J.J. Starks, appointed in 1930.

2015

In 2015, EdSmart.org ranked Benedict College one of the Top 20 HBCUs based on Alumni starting salaries.

2016

115 seniors graduated during the Winter 2016 Commencement

2017

204 seniors graduated during the Spring 2017 Commencement

2018

The College made front-page news in the spring of 2018 when it became the first South Carolina college to lower its tuition by 26 percent.

2019

In 2019, Benedict College received the 2019 ACE/ Fidelity Investments Awards for Institutional Transformation and was named the HBCU of the Year by HBCU Digest.
