    Keene Family YMCA is seeking a part-time Head Lifeguard to work in their busy Aquatics Center. The Head Lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and in surrounding areas when lifeguarding, instructing swimming lessons, and during pool maintenance checks. In the absence of the Aquatics Director, the Head Lifeguard acts as the shift supervisor. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE HEAD LIFEGUARD Builds meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests while exemplifying the Y's four-character values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility. Responsible for the supervision of all aquatic programs and operations in the absence of the Aquatics Director. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report). Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatics area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Commits 20 hours of working schedule to Lifeguarding and provides backup shift coverage as needed. Commits 9 hours of working schedule to administrative tasks, deck support, in-service trainings, and member engagement. Responsible for scheduling lifeguards during hours of operation, swim lessons, special events, and rentals. Assists Aquatics Director with the overall operation of the Aquatics Center including teaching lifeguard certification courses for the community, hiring/firing, and onboarding new lifeguards. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility. Must be able to swim 200 yards in under 5 minutes. Must be able to tolerate exposure to chlorinated water for extended periods of time. Must be able to retrieve 10 lb brick off bottom of pool. Must be able to vocalize instructions to bystanders in case of emergency. Must be able to perform practice rescues during any working shift.
