Beretta USA company history timeline

1812

Fratelli Beretta, first opened its door as a small local meat processing business in 1812 serving the region since the time when Napoleone Bonaparte reigned in Europe.

1815

Pietro Antonio Beretta was now working for the company, and in 1815 he began traveling throughout Italy in order to sell more gun barrels.

1850

After Pietro’s death in 1850, his son, Giuseppe took over and encouraged the company to start making complete guns.

1860

By 1860, Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta was making 300 firearms a year.

1861

Beretta again began making military firearms after the unification of Italy in 1861.

1880

By 1880, the production grew to 8,000 firearms a year.

1900

In the early 1900's, Fratelli Beretta expanded to a manufacturing enterprise with a stable business structure that has thrived through two World Wars and The Great Depression.

1903

At the time of Giuseppe Beretta's death in 1903, the company had 130 employees and a single 10,000-square-foot factory.

1911

1914

Beretta begins manufacturing handguns for the officers of the Royal Army of Italy, signs contract to supply 1000 machine gun barrels FIAT, model 1914

He’s also believed to have designed the world’s first submachine gun, the Beretta Model 1918.

1934

They continued supplying the Italian military with weaponry right up until German troops took over the plant in 1943.

1956

A few years later, in 1956, Italian trap shooter Galliano Rossini won a gold medal at the Melbourne Olympic Games using a Beretta shotgun – a first for the company…not the last.

1959

In March of that year, it bought an 86 percent share in Aldo Uberti & Co., s.r.l., a $15 million a year replica gunmaking business founded in 1959.

1975

In 1975, Beretta introduced the Model 92 in 9mm.

The first military adoption is made by Italy’s Consubin Team (Italy’s Navy SEALS) and the Brazilian Army (1975/76)

1976

The 80 Series of Pistols were introduced in 1976 and was known as the 80-Series At some point in the 80’s The Series was then called the Cheetah.

1977

Beretta United StatesA. was founded in 1977, when Beretta acquired a bankrupt gun factory near Washington, D.C., that had previously had a contract to service its products.

Beretta had already sold products in the United States for decades, but in 1977, the company established Beretta United StatesA.

1981

He had been managing director since 1981.

1985

Beretta won a hard-fought contract to replace the Colt .45 in 1985.

Since the initial contract in 1985, Beretta continued to provide United States armed forces with series 92 pistols through additional contracts.

1987

In 1987, Beretta sued General Motors after the latter brand introduced the Chevrolet Beretta car.

1988

The brand name was extended with permission to the Beretta Sport line of high-end clothing and accessories introduced in 1988.

1993

Ugo Gussalli Beretta became president of the company in 1993 after the death of his uncle Giuseppe.

1995

In 1995, they opened their first gallery in New York.

1998

In 1998, just five years after Ugo Gussalli Beretta became the company’s president, Beretta was unsuccessfully sued by the family of a 15-year-old boy who accidentally killed himself while playing with a Beretta pistol.

2000

By 2000, it would occupy 75,000 square feet of space in Gardone and another 50,000 square feet on other sites in Italy, Spain, and the United States (Maryland).

In early 2000, Beretta bought the remaining shares in Benelli Arms S.p.A., another venerable Italian gunmaker.

By 2000, to keep up with demand, Beretta opened up additional factories in Italy and Spain.

2001

With a corporate umbrella company in place to oversee its subsidiaries, Beretta Holding next acquired Sako Ltd., a Finnish maker of hunting and sports rifles, from Metso Corporation in January 2001.

2004

In 2004, Beretta released an updated version of the Cougar in the form of the Beretta Px4 Storm.

2008

The Beretta ARX160 is a modular assault rifle that Beretta released in 2008.

2009

That includes the largest military handgun contract the United States has made post-World War II, with an agreement in 2009 to supply 450,000 92FS pistols.
