Bergey's company history timeline
In 1924, Norman L. Bergey opened an automotive repair shop in picturesque Franconia, Pennsylvania.
In 1930 Clayton’s son Titus had a coveted job in the Ford Assembly plant in Norfolk, but starting a farm to raise and support his family was more important than the sought-after job at Ford.
Dr Bergey, while preparing the 4th edition in 1934, requested the Society of American Bacteriologists to make available the royalties received by the Society from the sale of the earlier editions, to meet the expenses of preparing the fourth edition for publication.
Bergey's Manual Trust was established in 1936 to sustain the publication of Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology and supplementary reference works.
It has gone through nine editions and has generated, as a more comprehensive resource, a unique compendium on bacterial systematics, Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology (Holt et al., 1984–1989), which now enters its second edition. It originated in the Society of American Bacteriologists (SAB) but it has since become a truly international enterprise directed by an independent Trust which was founded in 1936.

He was the director of biological research of the National Drug Company in Philadelphia until his death in 1937.
In 1961 Titus’s son James Harold took over the operation and began an expansion that would continue over the next 30 years.
The Trust in 1977 also published an abbreviated version of the 8th edition entitled. ‘The Shorter Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology’.
The first store was opened on the farm property in 1978 and a premium ice cream recipe was developed with the help of VA Tech.
A second location was opened in VA Beach at the Farmers Market in 1985.
A third location complete with a bakery was opened in Great Bridge in 1988.

Thomas studied Biology and Agricultural Science before carrying out his Master thesis project in 2002 under the supervision of Doctor Joël Doré at the INRA of Jouy-en-Josas in France.
Finally in 2005 the dairy operation was sold and the stores were closed.
He then received his PhD in Gut Microbiology in 2006 from the University of Potsdam after working three years on the conversion of dietary polyphenols by human gut bacteria at the German Institute of Human Nutrition under the supervision of Prof.
In 2006 Bergey’s Breadbasket was opened using recipes and techniques that had been passed down for generations.
Research interests: Lorena Carro received her Ph.D from the University of Salamanca at studying endophytic actinobacteria in 2009.
Since 2017, she is Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.
He is the recipient of the 2020 Bergey Award.
