Berkshire School company history timeline

1943

Buck led the school until 1943.

1951

He was soon followed by John E. Godman in 1951, who increased the school's enrollment to 330 boys and expanded the faculty to 35 teachers.

1964

In 1964, an arts and science wing was added to Berkshire Hall.

1969

In 1969, Berkshire also enrolled nine girls as day students in what Godman described as "an experiment" in coeducation.

1970

By 1970, there were sixteen major new structures, six of them dormitories, as well as a laboratory science wing added to Berkshire Hall.

1971

Godman described to them and their families as “an experiment.” The experiment succeeded, and the first female students graduated in 1971.

1991

In 1991, Richard Unsworth whose previous experience included being the headmaster at Northfield Mount Hermon School became headmaster.

2002

In June 2002 Christopher resigned as headmaster "amidst sexual harassment allegations."

2003

After being headmaster for only three and a half months, Piatelli died of a heart attack while playing hockey in Albany, New York, on October 19, 2003.

2007

Berkshire celebrated its centennial anniversary throughout the 2007-08 school year.

2008

In 2008, the school's main academic building was reopened after undergoing renovations.

2011

In 2011, Berkshire added a new music center and renovated its performing arts facilities.

2015

In the fall of 2015, Berkshire celebrated the close of its highly successful $224 million Hail Berkshire Campaign and the reopening of the newly renovated Geier Library which quickly became a gathering place for study and relaxation.
