Alex Tolbert learned about Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) in 2006 while a third year JD/MBA student at Vanderbilt University. James Blumstein's health law classes had made him very passionate about the healthcare system, and Alex believed HSAs could help re-align a lot of its misaligned incentives. In June 2006, Bernard Health was born. Nine months and just a few clients later, Alex's brother Brian joined Bernard. At that point, joining Bernard meant sleeping on Alex's couch. Shortly after that, Alex finished the JD/MBA program, the brothers got a 3-bedroom place in Nashville's Hillsboro Village, and things really got going. Since then, Bernard Health's team has worked hard to grow the company's value proposition. Today, that value proposition is the broadest in the industry -- stretching from the company's proprietary HR software platform, BerniePortal, to its industry-leading employer and individual healthcare advisory and brokerage services. All of these efforts are focused on helping the company fulfill its mission to be the world's most trusted advisor when it comes to helping people plan for their healthcare.
