Job Overview
Perform cardiac ultrasound procedures on assigned patients according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and hospital. Perform cardiac ultrasound procedures that follow radiological standards in a safe, accurate and timely manner, meet the American College of Radiology (ACR) imaging standards and allow the radiologist and/or physician to make a radiological diagnosis. Responsible for designated areas and/or procedures as assigned. Work cooperatively within departments and other service lines to create a system of quality health care. Work independently as required and be a clinical/technical resource for students and/or technologists.
The position requires pediatric echocardiography experience and prefers candidates with fetal scanning experience. Applicants should have a strong understanding of cardiac physiology and congenital heart disease, with the ability to identify various cardiac defects and adjust echocardiogram exams accordingly. Most exams are conducted in a pediatric cardiac outpatient clinic with occasional assignments in the NICU.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Associate degree in Radiology or related field.
2. Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (ARDMS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CCI).
3. Four (4) years of experience as a Cardiac Ultrasound Technologist.
4. Basic Life Support Certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Pediatric experience; preferably fetal scanning experience.

5. Ensure patient and staff safety for equipment used.
6. Participate in ongoing education and training.
7. Perform quality control on equipment and devices as required.
8. Communicate with other staff/departments to coordinate care of patients.
9. Maintain supply stock and request stock to be ordered when necessary.
10. Keep all work areas clean and functional according to DPH and The Joint Commission.
11. Train and educate students and/or technologists on proper procedures and techniques.
Physical Requirements:
1. Frequent standing, occasional sitting, walking, and lifting 30-35 lbs.
2. Manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate radiology equipment.

3. Assists physicians in obtaining transesophageal, intraoperative, and three-dimensional studies . Assists physicians in obtaining and recording data for research projects.

5. Maintains a good working knowledge of charging and billing process . Responsible for charging appropriately.
6. Prepares patient, explains procedures to patient (and family) and obtains clinical information from patient's cardiology chart prior to exam.
7. Obtains permanent video or digital recordings and tracings from the ultrasound unit.
8. Makes appropriate measurements and calculations from information obtained during exam.
9. Acquisition and exporting of three-dimensional echocardiographic data, and off-line computer analysis of the data set for more detailed assessment of cardiac anatomy and quantification of cardiac function.
10. Ensures that all tests are officially read by the cardiologist; contributes technical and professional knowledge to final diagnostic impressions on reports, participates actively in echo reading sessions.
11. Proofreads the final official echo report before it is sent to medical records.
12. Participates in quality control and quality assurance on all ultrasonic equipment and instrumentation by recording and maintaining documentation for review . Maintains order and cleanliness of all equipment and work areas to ensure that all maintenance and infectious disease control guidelines are met.
13. Assists supervisor in the technical training of new sonographers and/or interns. Develops and maintains a teaching file system.

5. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area.

Performs a wide variety of exams as required and necessary for proper departmental workflow. Performs duties as required in all areas of the department to include all campuses and either within Ultrasound or outside when appropriate for the hospital mission as determined by either the Manager or Lead technologist.
Work schedules as required through regularly scheduled hours or overtime as required for department needs.
Performs appropriate studies as determined through policy and procedure. Follows requisition in terms of providing proper study for patients. Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or asks proper persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study. Identify and document any limitations to the sonographic exam.
Works through radiologist requirements to provide appropriate views and films and provides additional views and variations of techniques as required by Radiologist, Manager or Lead technologist.
Provides service and care to patients of all ages.
Maintains equipment through interaction with both management and department service vendors to maximize equipment up time, patient care, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital. Keep exam rooms clean, tidy and ready for use.
Follow all high level disinfection policies and procedures.

The cardiac sonographer is responsible for performing professional quality
cardiac ultrasound procedures including M-MODE, 2D (real time), PW/CW DOPPLER,COLOR FLOW IMAGING, STRESS ECHOES, TRANSESOPHAGEAL AND CONTRAST ULTRASOUND studies. Tests are performed according to the standards/guidelines of the American Society of Echocardiography. The sonographer prepares the patient for examination by explaining the procedure, acquires demographic information, clinical history, and correlates symptoms with findings. The sonographer must have the ability to recognize abnormal pathology and demonstrate correlation of this information into a useful study, generating a permanent record of the examination on the digital PACS system and hardcopy. An initial report is prepared for the Cardiologist to read. Direct notification to the cardiologist is initiated for issues requiring immediate attention. Each sonographer is expected to participate as a member of the Cardiac Ultrasound team, assisting in all aspect of the delivery of services to patients and physicians.

Job Summary
Summary:
Responsible for specialization in imaging a patient's heart. This role uses ultrasound equipment to examine the heart's chambers, valves, and vessels.

Essential Functions:
* Use both color flow and spectral Doppler to accurately evaluate cardiac stenotic and regurgitant lesions, and intracardiac shunts and other hemodynamically significant lesions.
* Evaluate the hemodynamic significance of various cardiac disease states using all imaging modalities available in accordance with the department's protocols.
* Operate ultrasound system and assist exercise physiologist and RN during dobutamine and stress echocardiography.
* Perform diagnostic vascular examinations according to standardized laboratory protocols; deviating from normal techniques when necessary to provide the best possible results.
* Perform diagnostic vascular examinations, recognizing the significance of all structures that are visualized, differentiating artifacts from appropriate structures, while recognizing the limitations of equipment and utilizing knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
* Perform carotid duplex examinations to evaluate blood flow and plaque characteristics in the carotid and vertebral arteries with both real time imaging and spectral analysis using color capabilities.
* Review patient's medical record to obtain necessary clinical information including patient history, lab results, and physician orders.
* Obtains necessary clinical information from patients and compares requisitions to physicians' orders to ensure exam accuracy.

Associate's Degree Diagnostic Medical Sonographer required or Bachelor's Degree Diagnostic Medical Sonographer preferred or Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study preferred
