Certified Surgical Technician Department: Menino Operating Room (Inpatient Surgery) Schedule: 36 hours, Day/Evening, Every Third Weekend, Call Required As a member of the surgical team, the surgical technician provides patient care during surgical procedures by providing an aseptic and safe environment. Duties include prepping and sterilizing rooms, transporting patients, passing instruments, and assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other staff during surgery. Uses technical and aseptic techniques to ensure the methodology complies with established sterile standards and procedures. This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus: $10,000 sign-on bonus - for candidates with over 1 year of multi-specialty experience, paid out after successfully completing 6 months of employment. $5,000 sign-on bonus - for candidates with less than 1 year or single specialty experience, paid out after successfully completing 6 months of employment. Essential Functions * Provide emotional support to patients when appropriate. * Perform surgical skin prep using principles of aseptic technique. * Provide appropriate barriers when draping sterile field. * Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures by anticipating needs and preparing equipment in advance. * Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instruments and update surgical trays as necessary. * Perform ongoing assessment of operative procedure. * Determine deviations from the norm and provide for the indicated supplies and equipment. * Under the direction of the surgeon, retract tissue, hold tissue, suction body fluids, and sponge and irrigate without harm to body tissue. * Under the direction of the surgeon, cauterize bleeders if it is essential to the progress of the case. * Communicate unusual occurrences at the sterile field to the circulating nurse. * Safely assist in the moving and positioning of patients. * Perform surgical counts in a safe and efficient manner. * Ensure that appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment are assembled for procedures. * Ensure that room sets are thorough. * Research case requirements when indicated. * Perform surgical hand scrub per CDHC policy. * Use principles of aseptic technique in all aspects of job, including opening sterile supplies. * Reprocess instruments when needed. * Assist with room clean up, mindful of minimizing turnover time. * Perform autoclaving functions. * Collaborate with other OR and Childbirth team members, surgeons, and management team to solve problems and improve care delivery. * Communicate problems and related information to the appropriate person. * Assume role of preceptor in collaboration with the Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse to ensure a systematic and effective orientation program. * Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, and environmental standards. * Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations, or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise. * Meet annual competency and retraining requirements. * Attend meetings as required. * Perform other functions/duties as requested. * Additional duties include CSP processing, stocking carts, stock rotation, and picking case and room set up for AM cases. Accurately prepares each room with equipment and supplies and assists with oral surgical procedures including taking vital signs, digital images and x-rays and reviewing post-operative instruction to patients. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares patient for treatment; review medical and dental history and consult with medical practitioner. Conducts oral exam and takes vital signs, making appropriate notations in patient record and verbally reporting findings to physician. The surgical assistant is responsible for making sure all rooms are properly stocked with instruments, forms etc. and correctly decontaminates rooms after each procedure. Accurately takes impressions, bite registrations and fabricates models for pre-operative Orthognathic and trauma patients; prepares patient for procedures; cleans, sterilizes and sets up operating room. Using established written guidelines provides pre- and post-operative information to patients being admitted to Surgical Day Care Unit. Assists Oral Surgical staff with procedures and patients under local, nitrous oxide, I.V. valium and deep sedation and general anesthesia; under direct supervision of surgeon, performs extra- and intra-oral procedures* (i.e. suture removal, dressing changes, irrigations, changing elastics). This Anesthesia Technician - Cardiac position supports the safe and efficient care of patients receiving anesthesia. Responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining anesthesia equipment, assisting anesthesia providers during procedures, and ensuring proper preparation of anesthesia machines, carts, and specialized equipment. This role is part of the perioperative team with a focus on cardiac care.
