Beverly Hills Club company history timeline

1900

Even before 1900, slot machines could be found in Newport.

1916

Founded in 1916, the BHWC supports the advancement of social, cultural, educational, and philanthropic endeavors.

1926

Beverly Hills Country Club, which was founded in 1926 to give movie industry people a place to play together, has been sold to investors who plan to improve it.

1927

Beginning in 1927, the Beverly Hills Club was a popular nightclub, and included a backroom/illegal gambling parlor.

1929

Since its founding in 1929 — largely for those of the Jewish faith who had trouble finding a court — the BHTC has stayed put on a half-block of Maple Drive: with five courts, a swimming pool, a common dining room and a card room-turned gym.

1930

1930's In the early 1930's Peter Schmidt, a convicted moon shiner, built and opened the original Beverly Hills Supper Club on a 17 acre site.

1936

Refusing to sell out like other clubs had done, the mob burned the place down on February 3, 1936, killing the niece of the property’s caretaker.

1937

Originally built in 1937, the Beverly Hills Supper Club was a hotspot for decades.

1961

In 1961, former NFL quarterback George Ratterman ran for Campbell County sheriff, promising to clean up the vice and corruption.

1964

The revival, which marks “Funny Girl’s” first on Broadway since the original 1964 production, opened at the August Wilson Theatre in late April.

1967

“They Call Me Mister Tibbs” / “The Organization” (Kino Lorber Studio Classics): Sidney Poitier made such an impact with audiences in 1967’s “In the Heat of the Night” that he played Detective Virgil Tibbs in two follow-up features, both making their Blu-ray debuts.

1970

When he, too, wouldn’t take the mob on as partners, they burned the place down again, this time on June 21, 1970, during remodeling.

Richard Schilling purchased the property in 1970 and lavishly refurbished the building, spending more than $3 million in renovations.

1971

The Schillings upgraded the facility and reopened the new Beverly Hills Supper Club to the public on February 10, 1971 with dining and top-notch entertainment.

1974

The new showroom, the Cabaret Room on November 11, 1974 opens to the public.

1976

By 1976, Schilling had expanded the club, adding the Cabaret Room with a seating capacity of 1,000.

1977

BJ JETTER (pronounced “YETTER”) found multiple gigs as a drummer at the Beverly Hills, and the 22-year-old from Pleasant Ridge had one for May 28, 1977 — until it was canceled earlier in the week.

Investigators learned that the fire marshal’s division was not permitted in the basement after Monday, May 30, 1977, even though that’s where they wanted to concentrate their search for clues.

1985

The seller was L.A. Partners, headed by Gene Axelrod, which had owned the property since 1985.

1989

“Hell High” (Arrow): Cruel high-school pranks lead to bloody horror in this 1989 film also known as “Raging Fury.”

2002

Last month, Moore spoke openly on his “Rumble” podcast about his desire to repeal the Second Amendment in favor of the “right of all of us to be protected from gun violence.” He mentioned the Uvalde shooting and his documentary about gun violence in “Bowling for Columbine” in 2002.

2006

“El Cortez” (Kino Lorber): Lou Diamond Phillips stars in this contemporary (2006) noir about an autistic ex-con who gets ensnared in a murderous scheme.

2010

In 2010, a new investigation began, headed by Brock himself.

2015

Billy Wilder’s birthday lunch in 2015 was a remarkable surprise gathering of admiring directors, including Steven Spielberg, Stanley Donen, Francis Ford Coppola, Rob Reiner, Sydney Pollack and Ivan Reitman.

2017

On Sunday, May 28, 2017, from 2-5 p.m., a special 40th Anniversary Memorial will be held in the parking lot at the bottom of the club’s original driveway.

2021

The site of the Supper Club remained undeveloped until August 2021, when Ashley Builders Group began construction on an assisted living center, apartments, and homes.

2022
