    Certified Surgical Technician Department: Menino Operating Room (Inpatient Surgery) Schedule: 36 hours, Day/Evening, Every Third Weekend, Call Required As a member of the surgical team, the surgical technician provides patient care during surgical procedures by providing an aseptic and safe environment. Duties include prepping and sterilizing rooms, transporting patients, passing instruments, and assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other staff during surgery. Uses technical and aseptic techniques to ensure the methodology complies with established sterile standards and procedures. This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus: $10,000 sign-on bonus - for candidates with over 1 year of multi-specialty experience, paid out after successfully completing 6 months of employment. $5,000 sign-on bonus - for candidates with less than 1 year or single specialty experience, paid out after successfully completing 6 months of employment. JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Must also be a graduate of an accredited/approved program in surgical technology (or completed an Armed Forces medic or corpsmen program). CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: Surgical Technician certification required (unless employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility on or before July 1, 2013). KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Previous surgical tech experience preferred. Ability to effectively speak read and write English Ability to accurately interpret and use medical terminology and abbreviations Computer proficiency to access and enter computerized data/information. Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with patients, families, physicians, and other hospital staff. Duties and Responsibilities * Adheres to scope of practice as a Surgical Technologist * Maintains a safe operating room environment as prescribed by Hospital policy, AORN and AST Standards of Care, and regulatory requirements. * Adheres to isolation protocols established by Infection Prevention and standard precautions for blood/body fluid policies utilizing OSHA Standards. * Maintains a working understanding of, and adherence to, aseptic technique * Maintains integrity of sterile field * Ensures a safe environment for the perioperative patient and staff * Applies knowledge of proper patient positioning * Applies knowledge of prepping technique * Prepares and understands the specific use of all supplies and equipment used for surgical procedures. * Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and handles the instruments and supplies, and equipment utilized during the procedure * Demonstrates proper procedure for decontamination, cleaning, packaging, and sterilization of special equipment and instruments * Must be able to function in CSR to cover needs. Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5 PM Job Summary Working under general direction of the Practice Manager, the incumbent is responsible for effectively communicating with the oral surgery team while assisting during all phases of the clinical sessions. Accurately prepares each room with equipment and supplies and assists with oral surgical procedures including taking vital signs, digital images and x-rays and reviewing post-operative instruction to patients. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares patient for treatment; review medical and dental history and consult with medical practitioner. Conducts oral exam and takes vital signs, making appropriate notations in patient record and verbally reporting findings to physician. The surgical assistant is responsible for making sure all rooms are properly stocked with instruments, forms etc. and correctly decontaminates rooms after each procedure. Accurately takes impressions, bite registrations and fabricates models for pre-operative Orthognathic and trauma patients; prepares patient for procedures; cleans, sterilizes and sets up operating room. Using established written guidelines provides pre- and post-operative information to patients being admitted to Surgical Day Care Unit. (i.e. post-extraction instruction, care of wire jaw, nutritional guidelines for fracture and orthognathic patients). Assists Oral Surgical staff with procedures and patients under local, nitrous oxide, I.V. valium and deep sedation and general anesthesia; under direct supervision of surgeon, performs extra- and intra-oral procedures* (i.e. suture removal, dressing changes, irrigations, changing elastics). Exposes x-rays; ensures that x-rays are of adequate diagnostic quality. Performs selected clerical tasks as needed and all other task as assigned by the physicians and the Practice Manager.
