    Under direct supervision, is responsible for operating and maintaining various types of light to heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of County roadways, drainage structures, and associated rights of way; performs various routine construction and maintenance related tasks including those of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature; and performs related duties as required. Duties and Responsibilities * Operates various types of equipment including, but not limited to, mowers, shredders, fork lifts, sweepers, rollers, and small dump trucks used in construction and maintenance of roadways, drainage structures and parking facilities * Assists in patching and paving of County streets and roadways * Cuts brush with chain saw, brush cutter and pole saw Picks up and disposes of trash, brush and dead animals * Completes service checks, maintenance and minor repairs of various pieces of road equipment * Performs various safety related tasks at construction sites, including installation of various types of traffic control devices and directing traffic * Fills out daily log of various work activities completed * May exercise functional supervision over the Field Maintenance Worker positions * Performs related duties as required Minimum Qualifications * Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and one (1) year experience in operating light to heavy road construction equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience * Knowledge of the mechanical operations of road construction equipment; knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment used in road construction, maintenance; and knowledge of safety standards and practices * Skill in the operation of hand tools; skill in performing basic mathematical calculations * Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees and the public * Must obtain a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tank, and Air Brakes Endorsements within 12-months of employment * Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test * Position is Safety-Sensitive which requires mandatory drug testing prior and random drug testing throughout employment * Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance * Required to be on call 24 hours a day * May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek Working Environment and Physical Demands: * Working conditions are primarily outdoors * Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions (i.e. oily, damp/wet surfaces) * Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperature variations (i.e. rainy and icy conditions), dirt, dust, fumes, vapor, smoke, unpleasant odors, hazardous chemicals, overhead power lines, poisonous plants, loud noises, insect and/or animal bites * Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, occasionally moves objects weighing up to 100 pounds * Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information * Constantly positions self to perform essential functions * Constantly operates tools and equipment * The following equipment is representative of the size, weight and complexity appropriate for Equipment Operator I: Fork Lift, Hot Asphalt Raker, Sweeper, Stake Truck, Single Rear Mount, Rotary and Whirlwind type mowers, Dump Truck, Water Truck, Ditch Trenching Machine, Roller and Steam Cleaner and other construction equipment as needed * Temporary assignment to higher-level equipment may occur when necessary Supplemental Information Workstations with internet access are available, if needed, to view job postings and apply online at 211 S Flores, San Antonio, TX 78204, 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday.
