1810

The Society quickly grew and in 1810 funded its first foreign language Bible translation: William Carey’s Bengali Bible translation.

1815

Two years later, the NYBS began its ministry to the military, and in 1815 they began ministry to prison inmates.

1892

When Ellis Island opened in 1892, the Society continued providing Bibles to the flood of immigrants entering the country.

1896

The stele, which was discovered at the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes in 1896, contains 28 lines of text, mostly detailing the Egyptians’ victory over the Libyans and their allies.

1968

In 1968 the New York Bible Society became the translation sponsor of the New International Version of the Bible.

1973

When it was completed in 1973, the NIV quickly became the best-selling contemporary English translation of all time.

1974

The second part of an examination of the Bible as literature, this film examines the books of Joshua, Samuel, and Kings as historical documents, the Book of Proverbs as lyric poetry, and the prophetical books as protest literature. 1978

When this ground-breaking translation was first published in 1978, the NIV soon became the best-selling contemporary English translation of all time.

In 2007, Time magazine asserted that the Bible “has done more to shape literature, history, entertainment and culture than any book ever written”.

2009

In 2009, the International Bible Society changed its name to Biblica.

2011

New American Bible, Revised Edition (2011), Harper Collins [NABRE]. The text is approved by United States Conference of Catholic Bishops under the Catholic Code of Canon Law 825.
