1970

1970: Malcolm Walker and Peter Hinchcliffe open the first loose frozen foods store.

1973

After acquiring a second shop and a 20,000-square-foot cold storage facility in Rhyl in 1973, Walker and Hinchcliffe put the Iceland concept into high gear.

1981

1981: The company sells a 16 percent share to British Rail Pension Fund for £1.6 million.

1983

In 1983, the company made its first major acquisition when it bought up the failing 18-store chain of St Catherine frozen food centers.

1984

1984: The company completes an initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange.

1988

In the end, Iceland won, barely, gaining 50.09 percent of Bejam's shares in 1988.

1993

The first of the "Iceland at Littlewoods" stores was rolled out in 1993.

1997

Iceland quickly expanded its foodservice division, adding Cold Move, in 1997.

1999

In 1999, Iceland found a new bandwagon from which to trumpet its health-conscious message.

2001

Company co-founder Malcolm Walker stepped down from the chairman's spot in March 2001.

Though 2001 had been something of an bad year for BFG, in the 2001-02 fiscal year the company saw pre-tax profits (before one-off costs) rise from £40.1 million to £42.9 million.
