The Creeks suffered terribly during warfare with the United States in 1813-14, and were facing pressure from a Georgia government that wanted to acquire remaining Creek lands in the state.
Indian Springs State Park has its origins following a series of treaties between the Creek Nation, the United States, and the state of Georgia in the 1820s.
The signing of the First Treaty of Indian Springs in 1821, though unrecognized by the federal government, ceded thousands of acres including what is now Indian Springs State Park.
William McIntosh, a chief of the Lower Creeks (Creeks residing in what is now central and southwest Georgia), profited by acquiring several hundred acres of land through his involvement with the 1821 treaty and built the Indian Springs Hotel, which still stands across from the park entrance.
Against the wishes of the Upper Creeks (those living in parts of present day Alabama) McIntosh and his allies signed a second treaty which sold all remaining Creek lands in 1825.
Following McIntosh’s death, the Creeks, still under significant pressure, were forced to come to a compromise with United States officials and signed the Treaty of Washington in 1826.

An open lot across the street and one door east of our house remained vacant until perhaps the late 1960’s and featured a mounded area with sand around the base that resisted grass from growing for years.
My parents built a home at 421 Fairlawn Drive in 1961.
Woodland Golf Club is a Jack Kidwell design and opened for play in 1972.
When the membership wanted to sell the club, but could not find a suitable buyer, Long decided it was time to make an investment in the future and bought the property in 1982.
As Golf, in Ohio like the rest of the country, experienced another growth spurt in the 1990’s, Long was able to leverage his golf business and add two more properties to his operation.
Jack Kidwell teamed with a young Michael Hurdzan to design Indian Springs and it opened for play in 1990.
Eagles Landing in Oregon is the newest addition to the Long’s golf business, but it is one of Toledo’s best public courses. It opened for play in 1998 and was designed by Brian Huntley.
Woodland Golf Club in Cable, was purchased in 1999 and Indian Springs Golf Club, near Mechanicsburg, was added a year later.
