1936
Paul and Gerry began their legacy in 1936 at the Y Cash Market in the Willimansett section of Chicopee, MA at the intersection where two roads converge to form a Y.
Looking back, it's hard to believe that anyone's dream could survive. It was 1936 and the Great Depression had driven millions of Americans out of work.
1940
By 1940, just prior to World War II, the Y Cash Market's sales had increased 20 fold, and the store had physically expanded to three times its originally size.
1950
First Big Y Supermarket and Continued Growth 1950-70.
1952
In 1952 the brothers took a radical step and opened a 10,000 square foot store, nearly twice as large as most grocery stores at the time.
1960
In 1960, Paul and Gerry opened a 31,000 square foot store, the largest supermarket in Western Massachusetts at the time and their first in Northampton.
1963
Next, in 1963, another store opened in Chicopee not far from the original Y Cash Market'. It was the third Big Y Foods, Inc. supermarket.
1965
In 1965 Big Y opened a supermarket in a new shopping center near downtown Westfield for their fourth supermarket.
1967
1967 Big Y opens a store in Springfield, Massachusetts.
1968
1968 The company acquires seven-store Jumbo Supermarket chain.
1970
The 1970's heralded continued growth for Big Y. New stores opened in Ludlow, Agawam, Longmeadow and Palmer.
1972
In 1972, the company acquired two Popular Supermarkets, located in Longmeadow and the Sixteen Acres section of Springfield.
1981
In 1981, in tribute to both its employees and its customers, Big Y established an annual scholarship program to recognize academic merit and achievement.
1984
Later that year, in November 1984, Big Y purchased the former Adams Supermarket chain in Berkshire County of Western Massachusetts and opened stores in Great Barrington, Pittsfield, Adams and North Adams.
1984 was a pivotal year for Big Y with two major acquisitions.
The company was also broadening its business horizons, and in 1984, for the first time, it expanded outside the state by purchasing a supermarket and shopping center in Stafford Springs, Connecticut.
1986
By the time Big Y turned 50 years old in 1986, the company ranked 1 in Western Massachusetts with 21 stores and over 1600 employees.
1988
In 1988, Big Y's growing staff of technicians in areas such as refrigeration, plumbing, carpentry and electrical were consolidated into one facility in Chicopee.
1989
Accordingly, in 1989, it leased new offices on Chestnut Street in Springfield, which thereafter became its corporate center.
1990
After months of planning, the Express Savings Club' was launched in October 1990.
1991
In April of 1991, Big Y's co-founder, Paul D'Amour passed away at the age of 84.
1993
Dubbed Big Y's Homework Helpline, it was instituted to assist grade K thru 12 students in completing their out of class assignments. It was also in 1993 that, in Springfield, after three years of research and development, the company opened its first World Class Market.
1994
By June 1994, through Education Express, the company had awarded almost 2 million to over 900 schools in its market area.
The next year, 1994, it also opened another such market in Monroe, in Fairfield County, Connecticut.
1996
In 1996, its 60th anniversary year, Big Y acquired five former Edwards supermarkets in the towns of Avon, East Hartford, Guilford and New Milford, Connecticut and Chicopee, Massachusetts.
The company also added a new customer service in 1996, its Little Y Kids Club, a supervised play area for children in the store.
1998
Big Y went live on the World Wide Web with the release of bigy.com in 1998.
1998 Big Y moves into new corporate headquarters and goes online with bigy.com Big Y Wines Liquors is refashioned as Table Vine, a gourmet food and fine wine and liquor store.
2000
From Wilbraham, MA to Old Saybrook, CT, Big Y has grown since 2000.
Expanded Services and Upgraded Support Systems 2000 and Beyond.
2001
First, in June 2001, Big Y entered into an agreement with Retalix Ltd. to employ that firm's Storeline POS point of sales application for its promotional activities.
In 2001, Big Y opened its first in-store pharmacy, The Y Pharmacy, in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
2001 The company rolls out its new interactive, computerized register system.
2002
Next, in February 2002, it partnered with Cognos Finance to help fill its need to provide up-to-the-minute financial information to its department and district decision makers.
In July 2002, Big Y acquired the assets of Town Country Liquors in West Springfield, Massachusetts.
2003
With the September 2003 opening of their Walpole World Class Market, Big Y opened their first location in the Boston metropolitan area.
2006
In 2006 they developed a new prototype store in the Sixteen Acres area in Springfield, MA, called Fresh Acres Market a truly unique shopping experience of an old fashioned market with a contemporary flair.
2007
In 2007, recognizing a need in the communities they serve, Big Y developed its Partners of Hope campaign, to raise funds for local organizations that support awareness, early detection and research toward a cure for breast cancer.
2012
In 2012 Big Y added to their expansion in Eastern Massachusetts with the opening of the Franklin, MA location.
2013
December 10, 2013 in Lee, MA, the first Big Y Express opened, offering fuel plus convenience store products with the Big Y advantage.
