The Team As part of the Gates Foundation, the Institute for Disease Modeling's (IDM) mission is to support global efforts to eradicate infectious diseases and achieve permanent improvements in health by developing, using, and sharing computational modeling tools and promoting quantitative decision-making. The IDM team is composed of research scientists and software developers who develop and prototype computational tools to advise on global health and development policy and identify and address critical knowledge gaps. We seek a Principal Scientist with exceptional experience in artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLM) to join our team and work on adapting and translating advances in artificial intelligence and large language models into impact for underserved and vulnerable populations. You will envision, plan, and implement on strategic AI initiatives at the foundation. You will be collaborating with topic experts, field partners, and in-country policy makers so they can build the right solutions to their most important problems. You will bring to bear your field knowledge for cross-cutting impact: advising colleagues on their LLM projects, evaluating project proposals, informing investments, presenting on advances and tools in the field, and collaborating with a diverse set of colleagues at IDM and across the Foundation to go rapidly from idea to prototype that can be tested and iterated upon. You will approach difficult problems with optimism, creativity, expertise, and a willingness to lead and learn. Moreover, you will accelerate and magnify the impact of AI strategic efforts by building relationships and engaging with academic groups and industry partners; helping to convene expert groups as needed to quickly identify the best solutions and approaches to strategic initiatives and investments. * This is a 24-month limited-term position based in Seattle, WA. We recognize high-wage market differences in Seattle and Washington D.C., where our offices are located. The range for this role in these locations is $285,300 to $442,100 USD. The Team Our Global Health (GH) program harnesses advances in science and technology to save lives in low and middle income countries. We focus on the health problems that have a major impact in developing countries but get too little attention and funding. Where proven tools exist, we support sustainable ways to improve their delivery. Where they don't, we invest in research and development of new interventions, such as vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics. Our work in infectious diseases focuses on strategies to fight and prevent HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, neglected and other infectious diseases, enteric and diarrheal diseases and pneumonia. These strategies are supported by functional teams that focus on Discovery and Translational Sciences, Vaccine Development, and Integrated Development. The Accelerator funds the creation of novel technology capabilities that enable the achievement of the foundation's mission by fostering the conception, design, and testing of fundamentally new biotech platforms that have the potential to change current best practices or business models and show proof of concept for these platforms. By leveraging grants, equity, and donor capital, we work to ensure the capabilities advanced further the foundation's objectives and support the transition of these new technology platforms to execution partners. Some platform capabilities that we are exploring include harnessing the power of chemo-sensing for ultra-high sensitivity detection of volatiles, programming immune system responses for design of next generation vaccine modalities, and engineering antibodies for oral delivery. We will be exploring exciting new transformative technology capabilities beyond these within our broad mandate. Our team also includes more mature programmatic units aiming to achieve a “single-shot cure” for HIV and sickle cell disease in the next ten years, harness AI and machine learning tools to radically advance drug discovery and development to cure HPV and pre-eclampsia, and develop five new preclinical oral polio vaccine candidates in the next two years. Your Role We are currently seeking a Portfolio and Platform Lead (PPL) for the Accelerator team within the Global Health Division. The candidate will help put together and apply integrated product development plans, as well as bring deep platform implementation and management experience to the Accelerator portfolio. The PPL will apply relevant technical and execution expertise to best suit the complex ecosystem in which Global Health works with various partners (academic institutions, biotechs, PDPs, Pharma). The candidate will work with the Accelerator team and its partners to ensure that: (a) the portfolio of investments related to product development have robust implementation plans that ultimately result in effective, impactful, deliverable interventions; and (b) the portfolio of investments in cross-cutting platforms have robust development, implementation and tracking plans that facilitate the de-risking, advancement and/or termination of product/intervention concepts and candidates in a rational, expedited manner. The PPL will leverage subject matter and execution expertise relevant to drugs, vaccines, biologics, and novel technological platforms, and apply rigorous methodology to assist the Accelerator in assessing, managing, and continuously refining the portfolios to achieve optimal global health impact through our partners and grantees. Your Role The Senior Program Officer, Gynecology (SPO) will lead a portfolio of investments and partnerships to support development and introduction of products to address high burden gynecologic conditions for women and girls in Low Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The SPO will collaborate with private sector partners, researchers and their institutions, global health organizations, professional societies, and government agencies, to align innovation with needs of women and girls within LMIC health ecosystems. We are seeking a technically skilled and strategically driven Senior Program Officer to lead initiatives that transform the landscape of the understanding and interventions for heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) for women and girls in LMICs. The ideal candidate will bring strong clinical perspectives for gynecologic care for HMB, have research and data generation expertise, product development experience, and a passion for addressing health barriers for women and girls in LMICs. What You'll Do Serve as an internal subject matter expert in gynecologic etiologies of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and the relationship to anemia, as well as other key gynecologic conditions, such as vaginal dysbiosis. Develop a strategically aligned portfolio of investments focused on HMB Identify and seek concepts for investments that align with WHI GYN strategy Closely manage a diverse portfolio of investments Work with grantees to ensure optimal output and impact of these investments. Lead WHI initiatives for HMB and gynecology/menstrual health (MH). Collaborate on workstreams with external partners on investments to develop, assess, and introduce new tools focused on addressing HMB/anemia Assess and develop perspective on opportunities for WHI engagement in other gynecologic conditions such as adenomyosis, fibroids, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), menopause, and female genital schistosomiasis as outputs of the gynecologic learning agenda. Your Experience Advanced degree (MD and/or PhD) in gynecology, or adjacent area. 10 + years' experience in women's health product development (e.g. therapeutics and/or diagnostics), research of gynecologic conditions, and/or gynecology clinical care, including assessment of and treatment of HMB, BV, and other priority GYN conditions. Demonstrated experience with design and implementation of clinical trials to support product development of solutions, preferably in the field of HMB. Critical assessment of epidemiological, population and clinical trial data. Strong knowledge of relevant global networks and professional societies (i.e., FIGO) Strong program and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to coordinate diverse stakeholders, including NGOs, industry, academia, and private sector. Demonstrated ability to translate technical knowledge into actionable strategies, influencing investment decisions. Demonstrated ability to navigate highly sensitive or politically complex environments and operate effectively in ambiguous situations with limited information; comfortable executing and making decisions amid uncertainty. Experience in product development, conducting research, or clinical care in LMIC's, and understanding of LMIC healthcare systems is desired.
