In 1896, the Town of Billerica officially named the school as the town's high school as was mandated by law.
The Howe School became the high school in 1897.
In 1914, the overpopulation of the Howe School became a serious problem for the town.
A new Howe School was built in 1915 across the street from the original Howe, and remained a school for nearly 40 years.
In September 1916, the new Howe High School was open across the street from the original Howe School.
In the 1950 town report, School Supt.
The 1952 March Town Meeting considered a series of warrant articles to approve and fund a new high school.
BMHS opened in September, 1955, with an enrollment of 666; it cost $2,250,000, and was built for up to 1000 students.
The BMHS Class of 1959 was the first class to attend the new high school for all four years.
In 1910, the town assumed control of the school, and by 1914, overcrowding forced the town to consider building another building. It was the town’s junior high school up until 1989, when it was renovated to serve as town hall.
