Billings Clinic company history timeline

1911

The Billings Clinic was founded by Doctor Arthur J. Movius, who started his Billings medical practice in 1911.

1914

Stillwater Hospital Association was formed in 1914.

1915

In 1915, after practicing on his own, Movius had Doctor J.H. Bridenbaugh join him as an assistant.

1917

When Bridenbaugh went to war in 1917, he was assigned to radiology and received basic training in that field.

1920

During the 1920's a third general practitioner joined the group.

1922

In 1922, The Reverend Charles D. Crouch was appointed by Bishop Charles Wesley Burns to complete the fundraising effort.

1930

By 1930, five other physicians joined Movius and Bridenbaugh, forming the Movius-Bridenbaugh Clinic, which specialized in obstetrics, fractures, and trauma.

1939

In 1939, the clinic conceived a plan to recruit new physicians as partners of the hospital, changing the name to The Billings Clinic.

1940

The Association operated the Stillwater Community Hospital in a two story brick building through both good and challenging times into the 1940’s.

1950

Construction began on a new clinic across the street from Billings Deaconess Hospital in 1950.

1952

By 1952, the hospital added a north wing, increasing bed capacity to 144.

1961

By 1961, a south wing was added, increasing the number of beds to 205.

1972

In 1972, the hospital pioneered Billings' first open-heart surgery.

1993

In 1993, the Billings Clinic and Deaconess Medical Center merged to become an integrated health care organization named Deaconess Billings Clinic.

2001

In 2001, The Family Birth Center was opened, offering a 12-suite LDRP unit, a new concept in birthing for the area.

2005

In 2005, Deaconess Billings Clinic changed its name to Billings Clinic.

2007

In 2007, The Emergency & Trauma Center opened, offering expanded state-of-the-art emergency and Intensive Care services.

2009

In 2009, the Billings Clinic opened a cancer center, at a cost of $31.9-million.

2012

A new brick building was constructed and served as home to Stillwater Community Hospital until 2012 when Stillwater Hospital Association membership base changed to one sole member, Billings Clinic, and a new state of the art facility was constructed in Columbus in 2012.

2013

In 2013, The Billings Clinic joined the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a collaboration between Mayo Clinic and other health organizations to allow those organizations to access Mayo's clinical expertise.

2014

Billings Clinic launched Montana’s first Internal Medicine Residency program in 2014, a testament to its mission of advancing health care, education, and research.
