Birmingham-Southern College company history timeline
Birmingham-Southern traces its history back to 1856, when Southern University was established in Greensboro by the Methodist Conference.
In 1859, Southern University opened with 52 students—many of whom left two years later to fight in the Civil War, which left the institution depleted.
Later in 1897, the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church laid the foundation for a new college in Birmingham.
A year later and about 100 miles away, the North Alabama Conference College opened on a hilltop west of the young city of Birmingham; in 1906, the school changed its name to Birmingham College.
Birmingham-Southern College traces its modern athletic history back to the 1918-19 academic year when Birmingham College and Southern University merged to form Birmingham-Southern College.
While athletics existed at both previous institutions and some records of those teams and events exist, BSC's official athletic life began in that 1918-19 season.
Phi Beta Kappa recognized Birmingham–Southern in 1937, establishing the Alabama Beta chapter.
In 1965, the college enrolled its first black students; some BSC students had previously joined their African-American peers from other institutions to fight for civil rights.
In 1987, it was honored as the number one Regional Liberal Arts College in the South Region, and in the next year, it was promoted to the liberal arts college, Bachelor’s category, which is the top category a liberal arts institution can attain in the magazine’s annual rankings.
