Bishop Gorman High School company history timeline

1954

Bishop Gorman High School opened its doors on September 7, 1954.

1956

In 1956, under the direction of Monsignor Vincent Wolf, pastor of Immaculate Conception Cathedral, the land was purchased in "rural" South Tyler for the establishment of a Catholic high school.

1958

Two years later, Tyler Catholic High School opened on September 2, 1958.

1960

1981

In the seventies and eighties, Pastor Monsignor Milam Joseph led the school system through more than twenty years of growth, including the construction of the middle school wing at Bishop Gorman in 1981.

1998

Under his guidance, in 1998, Bishop Gorman became the first school in East Texas to be named a United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon Exemplary School.

2005

In 2005, the SFCS community was challenged to meet the needs of updating the 45 year old O’Gorman High School.

2007

Classes began at its current Summerlin location on September 5, 2007.

2010

In July of 2010, Bishop Álvaro Corrada restructured the organization of the Tyler Catholic School System, naming Bishop Gorman as a regional school with sister elementary schools in surrounding counties, thus becoming Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic School.

2011

O’Gorman’s 1000 seat Performing Art Center opened in the fall of 2011.

2012

Work on converting the original auditorium into a wrestling and weight room began in the spring of 2012 and is completed.

2014

In July of 2014 SFCS introduced a new leadership structure.

2018

The Class of 2018's sixty- three members garnered over $7 million in collegiate scholarships, the largest amount for any school in Smith County, including public and private schools.
