I just put in my two weeks from BJ's Sunday. Would have been 5 years with the company in August. Had many good memories doing everything from FLS to Carts to Lower Office. Seems like a lot has changed in my region since the buy-out. Lots of management change at the store level. Were you exclusively LP? If not, what was your favorite position to work?

It was 50/50 LP & Cashier. I strongly preferred working the register, the door was so boring. Although it was pretty easy to text up there.

I don't have any BJ's near me so when i first read that i thought it was a strip club... well, Has anyone ever asked to purchase oral sex while in the establishment? (My mind is a bit dirty)

Constantly as a joke, nobody was ever serious. Although I did have coworkers engage in the act while on the clock. I also attempted my luck in the parking lot of BJ's with my wife, also an employee there, but to no avail.

Any crazy stories from your shifts? Love BJ's, always admired the concept of buying in bulk.

Far too many. I'll start with my first experience that was a catalyst to hundreds of crazy stories. During my first week as a cashier I was scanning items coming across the belt, a package of salmon comes through, I place it in the shopping cart, and all of the sudden "WHAT THE *** DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!?!?" I'm immediately confused and ask "What's wrong sir?" He then asks me to look at the salmon I just handled. I pick the salmon back up and examine it. There's a very small hole in the upper right hand corner of the package. I ask if that's what he's talking about. He says yes, why would I do that to his fish? Well...I didn't. I used the scan gun to get the item, right in front of you, and gently placed it on the top part of the cart so no other items could potentially pierce it. He then proceeds to curse some more, become loud, and ask for a discount on the salmon. It was at this exact moment that I realized how shady some customers would be in a retail environment. He was clearly just looking to save some $ by causing a stink over nothing I did, he probably poked the hole himself. Plus if the salmon was potentially contaminated, wouldn't you want to go back and grab a properly sealed package?

Why did you get fired? How is/was the pay?

I was working at the door where my job is to basically greet members and double check transactions. A man approached me at the door with a 60 inch Vizio TV on a flatbed with the assistance of our clubs cart retriever. He handed me a receipt, I checked it, and I wished him a good night as he left the club. Video surveillance footage was shown to me the day I was fired confirming what I just described. During our daily inventory counts the next day, an employee noted that a Vizio 60 inch TV was missing. That loss is being attributed to me for that interaction working the door. I also did the daily inventory counts when I was scheduled to open at the door. I know how the process works, and errors can easily be made leading to inaccurate reports. A theft could have occurred the previous business day, and accidentally scanning the gun twice can lead to a false count. The daily inventory counts are not routinely doubled checked by another employee, so once a report is signed and handed in it's considered official without much thought. The reason I was given for being fired was that I didn't follow our BOAT and OAR policy, which is BJs method for checking orders. BOAT applies to regular shopping carts and it stands for- Bottom of the cart, Over $500 items, All TVs, Thank the member. OAR applies to flatbeds, O&A are the same and R stands for Random 3 items. I did follow the BOAT and OAR procedure. I vividly remember checking the receipt and matching it to the box. I was accused of being 8 feet away which is too far away to check the information on the box. Video footage does show me being apart from the flatbed around that distance, but everything I needed to see is visible from that distance. The TV boxes have its information plastered all over the box, in large font, and its very easy to see. I was also told it does not look like I fully unfold the receipt. The video surveillance footage shown to me wasn't zoomed in and not in high definition, so its tough determine how exactly the receipt was handed to me and how I handled it. I dont recall exactly how it was handed to me or how I handled it, just that I did my job to the best of my ability. However unfolding the receipt in this scenario is rather irrelevant. Everything necessary to check can be seen from the top half of a folded receipt when 1 item is purchased. I also spoke to an employee who was supervising the front line at the time. The alleged suspect approached her saying that a TV should be held for him and hes picking it up. The supervisor also handled the receipt and everything looked fine to her. She couldn't find the TV where it was supposed to be held, this sometimes happens as the club doesn't have great communication at times. She then paged a manager to tell them what the situation was. A manager then gave her verbal confirmation to instruct our cart retriever to grab a flatbed and pull the TV off the floor for the member. If the club had taken the time to do a little investigating, they would have realized it was a pickup order. It's normal for a TV to be held after purchase because sometimes members cannot fit them in their car, and have to return at a later date/time with a vehicle than can hold a TV. The club sales log does show one of the same Vizio 60" TVs being purchased on 3/30. Our club was closed on 3/31 for Easter, so 4/1 would have been 1 business day to pick up the TV. The date of the alleged theft was 4/1. In addition, the manager who did the firing and I have had a deteriorating relationship over the last 6 months. There was motive to let me go the first second he could link me to something. I also obtained documents from other employees that the firing manager typed up and sent to his immediate superiors, and the stories contradicted each other. Long story short- Manager hated me and I got screwed. As far as the pay goes- They start you higher if you have previous cashier experience, and pass their assessment test with flying colors. Otherwise minimum wage. Every 6 months you would get a .40 raise if you did well on your performance review. My final pay was $11.35 an hour. Once you cross $11 I believe they then reduce the raise to .25 every 6 months.

What club did you work for? I'm a current employee(but hopefully leaving next week). I don't know how your club was or what region you were in but things in my club have gone from bad to worse over the past year. That was just a mini rant from me due to frustration..sorry about that.

I would rather not say which one because of the papers we signed. I worked in their personnel office at one point, so I know that we are technically allowed to talk about it online or we can get in some sort of trouble. But I can say it was in NJ. I know the one I worked in has become really bad recenly. It's only because of the corruption that occurs with regional managers and such. They fire a lot of good managers and hire horrible ones, only because they either have connections or their buddy buddy with the right people.

No, the car companies pay BJ's for the space to display their models. It's like when you see a car displayed in the mall. They're there for advertisement, but BJ's doesn't sell them.

what employee discounts do u get?

Employees do not get any official discounts. We do get: -A free membership account which has five free membership cards. One is for us, the initial employee, and the other four are for other people. (I gave one to each aunt/uncle, so my entire family from my mom's side had a free membership for 3 1/2 years) We can also print out our own card multiple times and hand one or two to friends (we can't do it "officially," but everyone does it) -We have unlimited access to coupons. We can't take the whole box or anything, but as soon as they come, you can take home two or three a day. It's definitely useful for good coupons. -When a product get's a really good rebate, we usually are the first ones to know and get those items. For example, after christmas the holiday M&Ms that were 6-8 dollars, are $1 after christmas. The same things goes for candles and other products. -Depending how cool you are with your managers, they sometimes give you an extra discount on display items. Normally it's 10% off, but we can get a bit more. -Employees learn how to work the system. Normally, you can not substitute a product on a coupon, but if you get along with your fellow co-workers, you can do it. In the club I used to work for, we did this constantly. This was just one of the few perks of an employee, some which can be extended to customers, but that depends how your relationship with the employee is. As a membership club, you have a lot of recurring members constantly shop there year round.

I shop at BJ's about twice a month sometimes more. I see the same lady in the store everytime and she constantly watches everyone. I suspect she's an undercover loss prevention employee or just crazy bored and spends her time wandering the store. Does the company pay people to spy on shoppers or is this just a single case of crazy?

Single case of crazy. The loss prevention team covers two areas, the front door and the receiving area in the back. This way neither employees or customers can try to sneak anything unpaid for out of the store. Their duties also include keeping count of electronics and other items, as well as, keeping watch of the trucks coming in during receiving hours. During the crazier holidays, more team members are out on the floor (employees) but they are there to assist people, because we normally dont have sales floor people. Although, if a team member sees something suspicious, we are to tell a manager and they handle the matter accordingly.

Do they still start lower level managers at sub $30k cause that was ***. I busted my *** there for almost five years and probably made more in OT when I was hourly

They still don't pay that much. I've seen some lower level managers get paid $16 an hour. They usually have to work 9+ hour shifts a day
