1989

The first employees of Black Diamond Equipment Ltd, 1989

1991

Metcalf moved the company and its 45 employees from Ventura, California to the Salt Lake City, Utah area in September 1991 to be closer to the climbing and skiing opportunities provided by the Wasatch Mountains.

In 1991, Black Diamond relocated from the California seaside to Salt Lake City, where the nearby Wasatch Mountains offer a great testing ground.

Black Diamond had 48 employees and revenues of $7 million in 1991, reported Inc.

By 1991, only two short years after their inception, they were the second-largest carabiner production company in the world.

1992

The company hired another Utah firm, Chums Ltd., to install custom automation equipment to speed up its carabiner production in 1992.

1992: Terminator ski boot is developed with SCARPA of Italy.

1996

1996: Bibler Tents is acquired.

In 1996, Black Diamond Equipment Europe was established in Reinach, Switzerland, making Black Diamond products more widely available throughout Europe.

1999

He died in an avalanche in October 1999.

2000

Black Diamond began leasing a new warehouse in Salt Lake's Ninigret Park in 2000.

2001

They would spend large amounts of time and money making the device practical and wearable and by the year 2001, they would have two iterations of their AvaLung at different price points to make this accessible to as many backcountry enthusiasts as possible.

2002

In 2002 they importantly acquired Skye Alpine Inc., which manufactured ski skins that Black Diamond could then continue to develop for their own product line.

2006

In 2006, Black Diamond Equipment Asia was established in Zhuhai, China to serve as both a secondary manufacturing facility, as well as a global distribution hub.

2010

In May 2010, Black Diamond Equipment was acquired for $90 million by Clarus Corporation.

2015

In 2015, Black Diamond announced they would be expanding their Utah manufacturing facility.

2016

In 2016, they announced they would be moving their European headquarters from Reinach to Innsbruck in Austria.
