One of South Dakota's largest public universities, Black Hills State University attracts students from all over the state and beyond looking to take advantage of its substantial academic opportunities. Located in Spearfish, South Dakota, Black Hills State grants bachelor's, master's and associate's degrees in more than 90 fields of study. Majors available at the bachelor's level include Applied Technical Science, Art, Elementary Education, Human Services, Music, Psychology, Speech Communications and Theatre. Black Hills also has less commonly offered majors such as American Indian Studies, Business Education, Corporate Communications and Outdoor Education. Approximately 20 pre-professional programs in medical and other fields are also available. A research university, Black Hills conducts research activities in such fields as the natural sciences, education and plant and herb science. In fact, Black Hills boasts one of the largest herbariums in the world. Student clubs and organizations also feature numerous opportunities. You can join a theatre society, work at the student-run radio station or join a circus club, an organization for non-traditional students, a community service club, or a group for pre-law students and lots more. An application, transcripts and SAT or ACT scores are required for admissions consideration. Tuition is significantly lower for South Dakota residents and students may also apply for financial aid.
