Block and company history timeline

1934

1934 - Mitchell Block, a young law student, saw the need for specialty office supplies for lawyers and Block and Company was born.

1936

1936 - Mitchell personally sourced all products and developed the first Block and Company catalogs.

1940

Block & Company, Inc., Realtors began with the purchase of the Werby Realty and Investment Company in 1940.

1946

Block & Company, Inc., Realtors was founded in 1946 by brothers James and Allen Block.

1946 - Mitchell expanded the business to serve banks introducing specialty cabinets and anodized aluminum coin trays in bank colors.

1960

1960 - Block and Company patented Color Keyed Coin Tubes and 6 years later Porta-Count® Coin Trays, still popular solutions for managing coin today.

1962

1962 - A sign of the times, Block developed a line of custom counter signs, perpetual calendars and more to serve customer communication and promotional needs.

1967

Block & Company operated as a partnership until 1967, when it was incorporated as Block & Company, Inc., Realtors.

1974

Operations were headquartered in the Downtown Kansas City, Missouri office at 14th Street & Grand Boulevard until 1974 when Block & Company, Inc., Realtors moved to its current location in the Skelly Building on the Country Club Plaza at 605 W. 47th Street.

1975

David M. Block joined Block & Company, Inc., Realtors in 1975 as a Sales Associate concentrating on leasing, sales and development of retail shopping centers, restaurants, and investment properties.

1978

1978 - Block patented the tried and true, original Wedgy® Pen, still widely used by banks and retailers nationwide.

1989

1989 - Block opened a cut and sew bag plant in Bristol, TN to develop a line of specialty bags to secure and transport money and documents.

1993

With the untimely death of his father, James "Jimmy" Block in 1993 at age 69, David assumed a leadership role at Block & Company, Inc., Realtors.

2004

2004 - Block expands product selection with full line office products, cleaning and breakroom supplies and a full selection of signage and displays.

2009

With these commitments as the driving force, in July, 2009, Allen’s sons and Principals of the firm, Kenneth, Stephen and Michael Block started a new firm, Block Real Estate Services, LLC (BRES), in order to further and build upon the values established by Allen J. Block.

The original inspiration for Square occurred to Jack Dorsey in 2009 when Jim McKelvey (a friend of Dorsey) was unable to complete a $2,000 sale of his glass faucets and fittings because he could not accept credit cards.

2011

2011 - Block celebrated 70 years with a new logo, a new look, and a continued commitment to providing expertise and innovative solutions to customers' growing needs.

2014

2014 - Block’s 80th Anniversary – a milestone year that allows us to reinforce our commitment to our customers.

2018

2020

In October 2020, Square put approximately 1% of their total assets ($50 million) in Bitcoin (4,709 bitcoins), citing Bitcoin's "potential to be a more ubiquitous currency in the future" as their main reasoning.

2021

The company purchased an additional $170 million worth of Bitcoin (approximately 3,318 bitcoins) in February 2021, bringing Square's total holdings to almost $500 million in Bitcoin (total approximately 8,027 bitcoins).

On March 2, 2021, Square reached an agreement to acquire majority ownership in Tidal.

2022

On January 31, 2022, Block completed its acquisition of Afterpay.
