Our company was founded in 1939 in Chicago, Illinois by Henry Blommer, Sr., along with his brothers Al and Bernard.
Henry Sr.'s father was a partner in Milwaukee's Ambrosia Chocolate (now part of Illinois-based Archer Daniels Midland). Henry was working there when he and his brothers decided in 1939 to strike out on their own in Chicago, long a major hub for commercial bakeries and candymakers.
The pungent aroma of roasting cocoa beans emanating from the Blommer Chocolate Company has tempted Chicagoans since 1939.
By 1948, our business warranted further expansion.
In 1952, Blommer purchased the common stock of Boldemann Chocolate of San Francisco.
Both the southern California and San Francisco operations were consolidated in 1970 when a new facility was built in Union City, California.
Barry Callebaut, a Swiss cocoa processor with offices in Chicago, acquired the cocoa business of Petra Foods for $950 million in 2013.

Olam International, a Singapore-based commodities business, bought Chicago-based Archer Daniels Midland’s global cocoa business for $1.2 billion in 2015.
It has been on an acquisition streak: Fuji Oil last year purchased Industrial Food Services in Australia, in 2016 purchased GCB Specialty Chocolates in Malaysia, and the year before acquired Harald in Brazil.
